roundthirteen
Hi, the diff cover gasket is seeping on my 08 spec B. How hard is it to change these? I thought it'd be as simple as draining the fluid, unbolting the cover, and swapping the gasket. There looks to be two bolts going to cross member does all this need to be dropped? My car's not a sleeper it's a hibernator. http://pure-tuning.com
KCwagon
It can be done in the car, although it is a tight fit. Silicone is used to seal the diff cover. Cleaning both surfaces really well before applying the silicone sealant is important as well.
Max Capacity
If you can get both studs out of the top of the diff, you may be able to slip the cover out. It may be easier to drop the U joint, front hanger and lower the diff on a jack. http://people.csail.mit.edu/ilh/vacation/ read the manual. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
You can use a floor jack or tranny jack to support the front of the diff and lower and titl it just enough to get the cover off. It really is not that hardto get the axles in /out if you want to remove the diff and do it on the bench. I had to drop mine twice a couple years back. Seems the previous owner of the used diff I bought bearried the fill plug. I could not get the plug out on my back under the car, I bought a gasket, pulled the diff back out, put my old cover in it and stuck it back in. I did find the passenge side bolt on the front support would not come out. I just tied the support to the LCA with a strap. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. spec.B Dream
I wasn't able to get mine done while the diff was on the car, though I was working in a freezing garage the morning of a road trip, so I didn't have a lot of patience. I also couldn't get the diff carrier bolts to break free, even with the impact wrench. I ended up taking mine to the local Subaru garage. The mechanic there is fantastic. He removed the diff, cleaned up everything, and sealed it all up. I think he charged a half hour labor, maybe an hour.
