Black fluid leak + CEL p0103

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately, another problem. I was accelerating pretty hard and my CEL came on. I stopped at autozone to get the code checked and take a look myself. The code p0103 and there was black fluid all over. Pictures below. The car is still driving well. What the hell happened?

Looks like your CV boot is torn, and all the grease that was inside sprayed out. You shouldn't drive the car anymore until you replace the cv boot and regrease the cv joint (assuming that you haven't done a ton of driving and the cv joint is still ok). Another option is to simply replace the axle. It looks like P0103 has to do with the MAF sensor. It's hard to say what's causing p103, could have a dirty maf sensor.

Here's more pictures and info on replacing the cv boot

This kind of repair is over my head, so hopefully others can chime in with their advice. I just figured I'd post a quick reply to let you know what happened.

Yep, I can see the huge tear in the first and last pictures. It's massive... probably half of the boot.

I'm not good with troubleshooting MAF issues. I mean, I checked mine but I have an CAPv2 that I could see g/s and volts.

Best you can do it looks like is clean it, check for loose wires or cracked insulation on the wires which could indicate they are in poor condition. I'm not sure if these MAFs are mounted with a rubber O-ring type of seal or not. But it wouldn't hurt to pop it out real quick and make sure the surface is nice and air tight.

Someone else may be more knowledgeable to answer that than I am.

OK, clean the filter then! :p

In that case - check if you did get splatter from the CV boot on the filter since then it can have ended up on the MAF. Get some MAF cleaner.

And more often than not the cold air intakes - aren't providing any more than some extra noise without more performance.

Looks pretty clean around the boot so a new boot should probably work as long as you re-lubricate.

Almost forgot to update this. Turned the car on the day after and the CEL was gone. I cleaned the MAF and air filter anyway and also installed a hydroshield on my air filter. Replaced the axle with a new Cardone 66-7355 that I bought from amazon. Install went well and everything seems to be fine.
