Had an excess of spare time today, so I backed my '21 Legacy and my wife's '20 Outback onto the ramps and did some measuring. TLDR: I'd bet money these are the exact same part.

Caveats: You are getting this information from a stranger on the Internet. The tools used here include a 15-year-old, Imperial-only Lowes tape measure and a cheap, metric-only digital caliper from Amazon. Your mileage WILL vary, and you should do your own due diligence.

Diameter-wise, both sway bars are 19mm. The outer width of both bushings at the widest point is 43mm (remember, the aftermarket bar would be thicker and have different inner diameter in the bushing to fit). The width of tongues (tongues? tongues!) on the bars is 6mm on both.

Those are the "precise" measurements. Now for some wild Imperial eyeballing with a rusty carpenter's tape:

The distance between tongues is 38.25" on both. The length from outside bend to outside semicircular bend (just making up terms here) is 41.5". The "depth" of the tongue from endpoint to the semicircular bend is 5.5" on both.

I'm convinced these parts are - dimension-wise - identical. There is a piece of what looks like red tape on the passenger side of my Legacy's bar near the semicircular bend. This could be an inventory thing, or it could indicate that the bar has different metallurgical properties. 🤷‍♂️

So, if the Whiteline bar would be a drop-in replacement for a Legacy bar, why haven't they just checked the Seventh Gen Legacy box on their database and tacked on a few sales? I'm guessing that it's a safety testing issue or that the addition of a stiffer bar on the Legacy's lowered suspension geometry has some unpleasant side effects on the ride.

Subaru has promised a "sport-tuned suspension" on the '23 Legacy Sport. Might mean we are getting some new goodies in the OEM parts catalog soon...

Good information fuzzysoul. Subaru said they went to a standard frame on these to cars. I have notice the part numbers are one or two number off each other. I would say the Outback is stiffer then the Legacy for the off road features of the outback.

  2. I want to do the Outback rear spring swap to my 2019 Legacy and have a chance to buy a full set (front & rear).

Is there a benefit to also swapping out the fronts as well?

No, the front ones are the same as in the Outback. There would not be any improvements on the change. I am not sure you can do that to a 2019 because in 2020 they changed the frame system in the Legacy and outback to be the same frame or base. the difference is they put a 2" left on the outback.

Here is great information on the changes. https://www.autoblog.com/2020/04/01/2020-subaru-outback-suspension-deep-dive/

  3. Thanks! Those don't look too pricey at all! Did you need to do anything in terms of longer brake lines or anything like that?

No, I had a Subaru upgrade shop here in town and I watch them and all they did was removed the struts or shocks and changed the spring on them and put them back. It took them about 40 mins. to do the job. I think I paid them $260.00. That was for the springs and to put them in.

  4. Do you, by chance, have the part numbers for the Outback rear springs?

I believe the part number the shop used is 20380AN01A. I know from the Legacy one to Outback was one number in the part number.

I did a look and the Outback Coil Spring is 20380AN01A and the Legacy one is 20380AN00A

  5. that looks good! With the new rear coils and a 2 trans cooler. I should be able to pull a light classic car 1250 lbs then?

I would think you should be able to tow or pull what ever the Outback can do. Other then the body the rest of the car are the same.

I now can put over 200 lbs in the trunk and there is no or little sagging in the back.

I think with the extra weight it may ride a little better too.

  6. That does look really good! I know you said it handles better, but is the ride any harsher when cruising around?

The ride is a lot better. Before when you would go thru a bump the front would handle it great and the back would be like you had no or week shocks. Now the car movie up and down together. I think its a smother ride. The only thing I notice that is more harsh is going over speed bumps.

  7. Interesting! Does it sit any higher in the back with the OB springs?

Yes, it does set higher or can I say it sits the way it should be sitting.

The car now has the same clearance from finder to wheel in the front and back.

I will take a picture and post it here for you.

The other thing is the car handles so much better and going over bumps the car is more in control.

  8. What I can say about this is because the springs in the back will not hold the load. My springs gave out because I put a lot of weight in the trunk and it sunk the springs. So I put the Outback springs on the Legacy in the back. Now I can tell you the car drives better and handles the corners a lot better too.
  9. Bring in the papers about that replacement, it may be that the pump replacement you had did fix the recall issue.

The papers I got from the dealer says it was a recall. But there was a recall on the cars from 2018 - 2020 at this time.

I am wandering if there is now another recall on the fuel pumps and replace fuel pumps from last recall.

Only time will tell if this fuel pump will need replaced again.

  10. I saw this on the news, it applies to the early 2020 legacies, there's nothing on stis about it yet, I've looked at the recall number every day this week, no part number, no documentation on it at all

I seen this and it could be a big problem. When I first got my Legacy and had about 10,000 mile the fuel pump went out. I hope this does not happen agian.

  11. I’ve been trying to determine whether using Sirius has any impact on these reboots. My wife has a 2020 Onyx that she got in December 2019 and I have a 2020 Legacy that I got in July of last year. Both vehicles are on the 380 software. She’s had a run of reboots recently and uses Sirius a lot. I believe each reboot occurred while she was listening to a Sirius channel. I’ve never used Sirius and have never had a reboot on my Legacy.

This seems coincidental but I’m trying to find some reason why she’s had so many reboots and I’ve never had any. Sirius usage seems to be the only difference in our habits. We both use Apple CarPlay but she hasn’t had an issue with that since she changed cables shortly after getting her car. I don’t use it that much but have never had an issue when I have.

I do not have Sirius program and do not use it and my unit has rebooted 2 times sense the install of the new software. It seems to me it happens when the card gets hot inside. Not sure but is the only time it reboots.

It goes black for about 30 seconds and then come back of and everything is fine. ??????

  12. Any chance you could post pics of your setup?

Any plans to replace your front springs?

No plans in changing the front springs. They are working great. I changed the rear ones because the back of the car set about 2 in lower then it should of. If I put any weight in the trunk the car would sway all over the place. Was scary to drive. Now the car preforms the way it should. The other thing I notice was my headlight was pointing up at times and with anything in the trunk I was getting flashed all the time.

The Outback spring did the trick and the car handles now like a dream.

I will post pictures of the side of the car so you can see the difference.
