  1. Got the heads off yesterday. They look pretty solid. Still going to get them checked. I'm going to take that JP guys list with me. The block looks good too. All hatch marks are still visible. One of the Pistons are nasty has gunk all over. Not sure what number it is but I'll show you. I still plan on getting a new shortblock even though this block seems to be okay. The biggest concern I have is the scoring where the crank is. My girlfriend's dad say that those marks are machined. I disagree. Because the metal is too shiny to have been done before it was put together. And it's fairly deep gouge. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/03/a76c3608845a3a9274a3ef9215a71c1d.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/03/56addc57632d2ad906bdb3578efc852e.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/03/472f8b78964e25d55747964cf669cf66.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/03/155539a27f7656ba44a952c5ad884c78.jpg Another questions too. There seems to be a lot of that custom gasket stuff all over this block. Like the piece that hold the two cams in place. What is that? And do I use it when I put this back together?
  2. Is it a good idea to go ahead replace the clutch plates too while balls deep into the tranny like this?
  3. Yeah before I really looked at it, I already decided to get a SB thanks to MRTris, hobo, and Compsurge and some reading. A rebuild is a lot of time and money for what I want. I'm looking to go 300-350HP nothing huge but a fun car. Word What caused all of that noise?
  4. Update; totally striped the bolts on the torque converter. I ended up grinding that skinny plate behind the converter. Got the engine mounted and turned it over and see a ton of scoring where the crank was rubbing against the case. So I'm guessing a spun bearing or more. Plus the turbo shaft snap. If you look against the crank wall you can see the scoring. All the walls are the same. When I took the pulley off though I kept hearing the air squeezing out like it was under compression. Hoping that's a decent sign. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/29/9209091647ea919994078880c9a29744.jpg Got the time cover off and aiming to take the heads off tomorrow night http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/29/54f76b73d89a70ed824817065a16e48e.jpg
  5. Thanks Compsurge. I'll bead blast and clean up that line. If it's too rusty I'll go braided. Just was wondering And that blurry spot is a chain holding the engine up. Update; bought a engine stand from harbor freight. Went to take off torque converter and stripped two out of four bolts. Getting the Irwin stripped bolt socket set dealio tonight then continuing. I also had a overwhelming feeling last night after that because I got nothing done and there is so much to do. All the rubber hose are old and brittle. Every single bolt head is rusty. I was frustrated on the drive home just the thought of this. But it's all good today. I'm just going to take my time on this project.
  6. Is there any significance to having some of these hard lines? Would it be okay to replace with silicone hoses? And if heat is a problem where these hard lines are then could i wrap them? I just don't justify doing a build and then putting rusty lines back in like this one off the oil cooler http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/29/b1a7083faf2d7d9763ec7329383a6fa8.jpg And what about these hard breather lines and coolant lines can't I just replace with silicone? http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/29/06657e24d8f7f420727fbe9ec6b64cc7.jpg
  7. Oh and every car I own has a turbo. Love this car it's pretty fun for DD http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/23/63cf1c97f89d526c9f01caadd73952fd.jpg 1989 Ford probe GT One owner (drove roughly 6k a year) No rust no dents interior is in prime shape 2.2 turbo 5 speed Electronic tuned suspension 6 lbs of boost 700 bones! Guy also gave me the old dealership shop manual on it. About three and a half inches thick. Gave me a service manual and a car cover as well. The car is real fun to drive I don't rip on very much but I do take corners hard. (Outside, inside the apex and shoot for the outside when I see the straight ) Pretty peppy but not legacy fast.
  8. I'll most likely go that route! thanks for that tip there. Also I have most gaskets already. for manifold (above and below tgvs), valve cover (felpro), every exhaust gasket from headers back ( most grimmspeed and thicker where applicable), but I'm sure I'm missing a bunch for the block which in that case, I still should get the oem set and hold on to the extras in case someone needs one or something. I think it would be a good idea to get a set of heavy duty head gaskets too. If I can get a block with the nitrated crank for the same price as one without then I think I win for bling and longevity factor. Thanks dude. Suspension is something I'm already planed on doing, just really havent talked about it much since we've been on topic about wether to go forged or oem lol I really appreciate all the help and motivation from everyone on here. My goal is by spring to have this hunk put back together! With everything done to it, suspension, engine, brakes, and a few minor aesthetics. It's an addiction. It's encoded in our DNA unfortunately Word. Although if I remember I have leaky caliper. Either I rebuild it or buy a set of new calipers and tell myself it's just money. I can always make more Hopefully I can get back on pipeline again this coming spring! Another thing. Someone mentioned a new or upgraded oil cooler, question on that. Can I run and auxiliary oil cooler through a sandwich plate in the oil filter location an run the unit to the front or is the sandwich plate for other applications. Ordering more parts next week. And since I'll most likely ordering another block, I'll be doing everything myself besides head work. Although could do it at the shop but I want the pros to look at it. Not my GF dad who owns the tool and die shop lol
  9. I guess I could get this block checked but for how cheap a new block is I rather just sell it and start fresh....
  10. I have the 06 but I thought the ej257 was the STI block? Says warranty included but not if its going in a car not what's it's suppose to go in for. They even have the STI block with the heat treated crank for the same price too?! P/N? Part number?
  11. Flatirontuning has the ej257 for the same price? Any rejections on that? You guys are awesome by the way. I appreciate all the help. I might go back to oem thanks to you guys. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/21/ce66d74414c06f579c8aaa428ae9c3e8.jpg Pulled it straight out without unbolting anything
  12. I needed that. I need to be cuddled during this ha
  13. It's a learning curve thing. But that being said about the oem block okay to handle those targets. It would be less prone to pop again wouldn't it? I know it's a lot of money but I'm in the block already and might as well beef it up a little right? I'm just a little finicky about oem reliability. I'll continue to read.
  14. It's kind of like seeing vesipene water bison for the first time
  15. Okay after doing some research for a few days I've come to a target "goal". I'm thinking turbo-wise an 18g. Mainly because I like quick spool up and it's not a huge turbo. A really don't want a balls to the wall leggy although a sleeper leggy is dreamy. I see that the bnr turbos are well liked. Although I've only read one thread (so far) that one guy had a slight problem with it. The oil seal went bad on it after 5 years and 60,000km (note the kilometers ). So one in a bunch I read had any problems. So I guess my "target" hp would be anywhere from 300-350. From reading I feel the car will handle it and so will the tranny with supporting mods. Can a tuner tune more torque then just pushing the car to what it's capable for? Like maybe not so much hp and more torque? I'm pretty sure I need a rebuilt low end and it's not just a blown turbo. I had chunks of flake in the oil pan so I have to crack it open anyways. So brings my next thing up, which I might take some heat on. I think at those goals, forged Pistons and new connecting rods and studs are never a bad idea. Basically I want a built engine tuned down. Is that a bad idea or the stupidest thing I've said yet? Or is having a good running block capable of more power dumbed down not viable? I am going to edit my parts list on the OP.
  16. About to snatch this up at work and drop it in ole kenobi http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/16/e56db1a00fdb2485ccbffa260817f987.jpg
  17. Thanks man. I'm in the middle of reading your thread. Very inspirational lol. Makes me wanna shrug off the haters lol. I don't feel so bad now for wanting the parts I do.
  18. Ah yes. But it's a RacerX. No need to remove bumper or fogs. Bazinga! http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131072
  19. Word. But there are pretty groovy Lagacies on their. Here's the two options I was talking about. (From seligram) http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/15/02f3c518e9a8f9f77f2488f9db6aed63.jpg http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/15/bf0310b3f0fd256d53fd3e5700c0e857.jpg The tranny cooler is tucked under the bumper skin with a fan. This seem like some work though. But it is next to the lines where the hard lines come in at.
  20. @MrTris yeah it's seems the be a good tranny. I was reading the 5eat pride thread to see the numbers on some of these trannys. Just a lot of debating on different parts internally. Thanks mentioning frkKevin. I'll check is stuff out.
  21. Yeah the hex mod. And a tranny cooler. I have two options with the cooler. I can mount it to the bumper with a fan. I saw a kid on Instagram do that. And I also like where you mount it where the top mount would be, which would be a cool so the hood scoop can still be somewhat functional. Any debate about this? I'm leaning towards where the top mount would be. I can fabricate a bracket with a quick disconnect so I can work on the car. And somehow incorporate a rubber bushing to keep the metal on metal noise down.
  22. The blast plates are for the manuals? Or can it be used with the 5eat too?
  23. Yeah the the pick up is on the list too. And Ill look into those blast plates. Anything to make the tranny stronger is cool with me. Thanks for the info!
  24. MrTris! Glad you chimed in! Yes I've already read your threads. I also see you popping up on a lot of other ones too. I admire your humor, sarcasm, and knowledge. But I'm going to answer all your questions and revise my plan. The car won't be a daily driver when all said and done. It's more going to be a weekend car, date car, and maybe do a few track days. But not a daily. No on the giant turbo. No garret, no "brotated", and you can't give me a VF-40. Most likely going the BnR route. 300 HP? Why not? Not unachievable and not too much more than what they "claim" comes stock on the car. This car won't see winter either. As much as a AWD car belongs in the snow, this car will not see it. Young? Sure. 25 that's young. When I originally tore the engine out I had all these ideas of what I wanted to do. I admit my build plan was very ostentatious. Not so much anymore, mainly because the transmission worries me. Money? not worried about it really. Stancewars.... Eh, not my scene. I'm more of a spirited driver, not your go fast on the highway or in between red light kind of guy. Although, I'm sure everyone of us has done that before. In southern Ohio we have a ton of twisties and that's what I'm more attracted to. Performance and handling is what my goals are. Not 400 hp 300 tq stuff. Not in this car. Drivers licence. Yes lost them a few years ago but I have them back now with no points. The only reason I am possibly having someone else build it is, I simply don't have the time. For example, what if one of the cylinders is bad and needs a little bore action? I would feel a bit better with someone else doing the bottom end for me, since that would be their field of expertise. I'm getting upgraded parts to help prevent things from going wrong again. Hence the filtered oil feed line, oil baffle, lighter shoes, and more. I'm glad you beat me in the head. I can take it. Honestly I haven't read my original post since I posted it back in march. Very young and dumb I guess. Compsurge! thanks for the info about the 18g. The mill... it's a Bridgeport lol girlfriend's dad owns a machine shop (and now, let the trolling begin). I will start looking into build threads more since time is coming. So before I decide where to take it to or if I want to do it myself, I'll let you guys know.
  25. Oh and did these myself too!http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/14/a14e9b7f6a67f0ce231ca91573e453de.jpg No picture of the finished product though
