  1. There a few problems you may run into: 1: I have already tried to put on larger tires on my car. And the problem is the inside of the tire rubs on the inner wheel well. So you won’t get a full turning radius. And my car has 1/2” wheel spacers. I think I’ll need about another 2” of clearance and a welder to put on larger tires. My car is at 10” of clearance now. 2: you will have to locate rims to fit the Subaru bolt pattern 5x100. Or figure out a way to adapt them. And find rims with the right off-set. 3: if/when you do get the big tires on you may wind up ripping apart the hubs, bearings, CVs. You will be adding quite a bit of resistance to the drive-train, that the Subaru was not designed for. Not saying that it won’t work. Just some things you go through when modding an old car. Do some research, see if anyone else has done it.
  2. Hi natetru, nice. How's she running? i highly recommend using a good oil in your engine. In fact everywhere, I use the highest grade lubricants i can find for my car. I've been using Amsoil in my cars for about the last 20 years. it's about $11.00 a quart, but it's well worth it. I running Amsoil 20w/50 year-round. With an Amsoil filter. 1: I put the on the Outback struts and 1" lift spacers on without having to make any changes. But you will need to get the car aligned afterword. (I did find out very quickly after that, when the body went up the angles on the half-shafts changed and the front CV joints started clicking like crazy. so i had to replace both front half-shafts with new CV's) 2: I got the struts from a salvage yard for about $50.00 a piece. springs and all. make sure the struts you get are not leaking and not rusted to death. 3: I did a quick check and i don't think you'll be able to use the goodyear duratracs on the Subaru. those are "Light Truck' tires. You might have to lift that Subaru a few more inches first. check out the Firestone Winterforce so far they have held up very well off-road and on.
  3. Hi boattlebot, the mod is not that difficult to figure out. As far is i know the mid 90's AWD Legacy's have a fuse socket under the hood labeled "FWD." By installing a fuse, it puts the transmission into Front Wheel Drive. i use that circuit for the switch. Download the Zip file on the first page. It has everything i used to wire the switch. The switch DPDT (NO/OFF/ON) position 1 ON: Normal AWD mode position 2 OFF: Cuts power to the circuit. 4x4 mode position 3 ON: Acts as the fuse in the socket under the hood. FWD mode It works perfectly, you can feel the difference in the right conditions.
  4. Hi stenben, Please re-post the images. Northern Colorado http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/northerncolorado.jpg
  5. Wow, thank you stenben posting that drawing. super helpful! might get a set made up this week.
  6. Very cool, i'll have to study the pics a bit. Could you post a pic of the side view of the car showing the centered wheel? Also could you please tell me what the square tubing dimensions? I had to lower the rear sway bar as well with lift. I did it the exact same way you did.
  7. Hi stenben and thanks for commenting. But i'm not quite sure what you are talking about. The roof rack basket? It is shifted slightly because i needed room for the bike tray on the passenger side. if that's not it please explain or post a pic. EDIT:>> Or, are you talking about the rear wheels centered in the wheel wells? if it works out because the struts are angled back. so when the strut compresses the rear wheels move back. Nothing rubs and the suspension works perfectly. thanks
  8. Nice, Thank you natetru. So far the Legacy has been a great car. Durable, dependable and fun to work on. You probably have the 2.5L in that car? once you replace the gaskets, it should be a nice strong engine. I've considered putting a 2.5L in my car, but the 2.2L seems to do just fine. Good luck with it!
  9. Winter is back in Telluride, and full month earlier then last year. Think it's time to throw on the winter tires: General Altimax Arctic Studded! Last nights snow, about 4". http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winter2013.jpg Thought i'd post a couple pics from a few weekends ago in Paradox, Co First time i've ever seen a tarantula in the wild. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/paradoxwe1.jpg Found that tarantula right next to where the car is parked. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/paradoxwe2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/paradoxwe3.jpg
  10. Hey scoobydoo73 --Thank you. I'm pretty happy with the results.
  11. A first ever attempt at Bondo-ing for me. You may have noticed the dent in the passenger side rocker panel. (see pics above) A scar from one of my off-road adventures. The dent was not a structural problem, but it's been bothering me. I had to fix it. You can’t quite tell by the pics, but the dent is about ¾ inch deep. I started by scribing the contour of the rocker onto cardboard. Then I made a template out of the cardboard. It took about 7 layers of Bondo at the deepest part for everything to match. The Bondo was surprisingly easy to work with and over all the rocker came out pretty nice. And of course I painted the rocker with Black Krylon. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/RockerFix1.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/RockerFix2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/RockerFix3.jpg
  12. Hi all, Another beautiful day in Colorado. Got the Subaru a bit dirty today on my way to get the oil changed. I took Last Dollar road, a fun not too difficult 4x4 mountain pass. My dog Sam checking things out. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/muddy1.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/muddy2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/muddy3.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/muddy4.jpg
  13. All the peaks around Telluride have a fresh coat of paint. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/FirstSnow.jpg
  14. Hi octain11, Thanks for the post. But please look at the other pages for exterior pics. Page 3 has the most pics.
  15. Just rolled over the 200,000 mark and still going strong! http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/200004.jpg
  16. I got the switch from Radio Shack Model: 275-710, 3 position (On/Off/On) DPDT
  17. You got it twisty. the wiring as i remember was pretty simple. No relay used. by cutting power to Duty solenoid 'C' you are basically creating a fault in the system. And you can definitely feel the changes the way the car drives, especially in reverse.
  18. Hey –Thank you, Kiyo1990 and monkeyposeur. lots of work, but the car iis pretty cool. Few for projects to go: Thinking about putting on ‘08 Forster struts next. And I’ve been looking for a hood with a scoop. Hi twisty –don’t know if I can remember the exact wiring, but in a nutshell: the DPDT switch has 3 positions Position (1) On –bridge the fuse under the hood marked FWD. making the car FWD (light on the dash comes On) Position (2) Off --cuts power to Duty solenoid 'C'. Making the transmission send 50% power to front and 50% to the rear Position (3) On –bridges the normal AWD circuit This was one of the first mods I did on the car and before I started journaling the work.
  19. Hey –Thanks andnyleswillriot. Telluride is a pretty awesome place to live. This Subaru does great on the Jeep roads. Last summer I drove it to the top of Imogene Pass 13,114 feet, up a very rough road. And it did great. Go for it, have some fun with your Subaru!
  20. Why is a lifted AWD Legacy a great mountain car? Because, in the middle of the summer we get: Sleet, freezing rain, flash floods and mud slides. Like we're getting today! http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sleet.jpg
  21. The top surface of rear bumper was pretty scratched and nicked up, so i decided to paint it. But what to use? At the local hardware store I found Non-Skid Krylon...Black, of course. Lets see how it holds up. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/rearbumper1.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/rearbumper2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/rearbumper3.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/rearbumper5.jpg
  22. The transformation of a Subaru… http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/oldfront.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/july2013_4.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/beforeRT.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/afterRT.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/oldback.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/july2013_5.jpg
  23. Hi --thanks for the comment. Yes, they are wired to the blinker circuit on each side. EDIT> Just tested the side marker light full operation with the wires i used: > Side marker lights are ON with the running lights ON > And blink opposite the front blinker bulb with the turn signal and running lights ON > Side marker lights are OFF with the running lights OFF > And blink in sync with the front blinker bulb with the turn signal and running lights OFF by chance, it's the way i hoped they would work. But, I thought I'd have to use a double filament bulb to accomplish the same thing.
  24. New JDM side markers lights (winkers) $40.00 on ebay.com with free shipping. Pretty easy to install, some minor wiring. what do you think? http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers1.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers4.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers6.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers7.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/winkers5.jpg
  25. Hi All, Just bought a used rim from the salvage yard for ($50.00) and I had 1 remaining tire from last summer that was still in good condition. So now I have a decent spare tire. I was always a little worried about being far off-road and having to get back on the doughnut-spare. The new spare was the main reason for the Yakima Basket. The 205/70 R15s won't fit in the spare tire well. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sparetire1.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sparetire2.jpg You can see i have also mounted the I-beam mast for the big jack. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sparetire3.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sparetire4.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/sparetire5.jpg Original wheels and tires that came with the car: 185/70 R14 http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/origtire1.jpg And now i have a trunk. http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/inside2.jpg http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/inside1.jpg The Ride: http://srvtelluride.dyndns.org/Subaru/theride.jpg
