  1. So now that I have the car, yesterday I took it in to do the provincial inspection in SK. The seller literally just had one done in Ontario to get certified before it was sold and it received all new brakes and rotors but of course this province wants to do one too. turns out Saskatchewan says my rear upper and lower control arm bushings are cracked and need to be replaced, my tinted windows need to be removed, the downpipe to catback flange is too rusted and needs to be replaced (even though there is no leak?) and the car needs an alignment. Granted, the car's underbody is rustier than I thought it would have been based on the body but it's just surface rust on everything. This car has had rustproofing done every year for the past 6 years. It was actually just sprayed a week before I bought it and still has the stuff all over it. Frame rails are good etc. Very annoying to have to go through these inspections but I might as well just get this certification done with so I can have some fun.

The guy at the shop suggested just buying new control arms because the bushings would be difficult to remove and replace. I thought about it and also thought about buying this Energy Suspension kit and replacing all those rear bushings with poly:

That looks like a lot of headache. At the end of the day I just decided to go ahead and upgrade. I got a good deal (still more than I was planning to spend) but I just went ahead and got a set of JDM Spec B aluminum trailing arms and upper control arms from a vendor on ebay. The set came with the standard lower control arms and lateral links as well with bushings that seem to be in good condition and all the necessary bolts. $375usd shipped and it should show up next week.

I've never installed those but I'll see how hard it is to do. I might save the trailing arms for another time, I hear you need a longer stud for them anyway. With regards to the exhaust flange, this car is going to see a Borla catback and 3" downpipe in the future so I'm not spending too much on repairing that flange. I think I'll just clean it up myself with a wire brush and sandpaper and buy a new gasket/spring bolt kit for it. Window tint should be easy to remove. Gotta please the man.

  2. Hello everyone!

Nice to be back here. I'm super happy to have just picked up my 2nd Legacy last week. Looking forward to keeping a log of my build here.

First, here's a long introduction and horror story before I get started with my new car. My first Legacy was a 2005 GT Limited 5spd wagon in SWP I picked up in 2015 with 193k kms. It was mostly stock except for some cleared headlights and an accessport with stage 1 tune. I didn't realize when I bought it just how rare of a car it was but it was my first modified car. I loved it and learned a lot about cars while working on it. I still have a thread here somewhere and a lot of videos with it on my Youtube channel. Unfortunately it met a sad end when its turbo gave out at the exact wrong time. I was on a military course and traveling between Gagetown, NB and Quebec City for the weekend in the dead of winter. I didn't realize what was happening at first because the symptoms were so subtle. I was driving on the highway and found that it was taking more throttle to maintain highway speeds. No weird sounds, lights, or other signs. I was in the middle of nowhere in the dark and drove it until I got to a gas station pulloff. I shut it down and looked under the hood and everything looked normal. I started it back up and looked under the hood I could hear the death rattle of the turbo and then the check engine light came on and I knew I was screwed. 300km from Quebec, 300km from Gagetown, -20 degrees in February. After waiting a few hours I was finally able to get it towed to Quebec but I had no garage over there and ended up having to keep it out in the cold in the base parking lot for about 4 months... I was just lucky my gf and future wife did not need her car and I could use it to drive back to NB. By the time I got back to it so many things had rusted out or were damaged I assume by the cold or the turbo giving out so at 233k kms it wasn't worth saving. My CoC was getting impatient with the car sitting there and I had to part it out quick-time before it got scrapped. I got a lot of things off of it but a full JDM Spec B front end, nameless catted dp, some pretty rad custom headlights and a lot of other goodies ended up in a Quebec junkyard somewhere :(

I was pretty put off and decided I wasn't going to get another turbo Subaru and started to look around for other projects. I decided to get a 2 seater toy and bought a lhd 300zx twin turbo to play with. After about 1 month I hated that car and just had to get rid of it. It felt like it was going to fall apart, all the 16 year old boys kept trying to be my friend and it didn't even feel as fast as my Legacy. A few months ago I started looking for one again. I came close to buying a really clean non-limited gt wagon and a low mileage 09 white Spec B but both times something just didn't add up with the stories.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. I had an Autotrader and Kijiji alert out for Legacies across Canada. One Sunday I see this 2005 SWP Legacy GT ltd 5spd pop up in Bright, Ontario. Where's that? I have no idea but that's my car! Well not my actual car but what are the chances? Looking at the pics it looked pretty clean and was a good price at $5000. Lots of kms at 251k. I messaged the guy and asked him some questions. He called me back and seemed like an alright guy.

We are from Ontario but we don't live there anymore. It just so happened my wife was home that weekend visiting her parents. I told her about the car and her and her dad went out the next day to check it out for me. It turns out the car was owned by an older couple out in the country that lived on a farm. They were the 2nd owners and the car had been out in that area its whole life, serviced by the same small town mechanic. The thing was bone stock, even down to the catted uppipe. The only aftermarket piece was the wheels because the guy had cracked one and didn't want to replace it. The body was completely rust free and everything was running well. The guy was looking to buy a truck and didn't want to trade it in at the dealer. This was a literal barn find. My wife flew back home that night and after talking for a bit I called the guy up and told him I'd take it, sight unseen. I flew to Ontario the next weekend, spent some time with the parents, closed the deal on the car and got it all set up to ship out to Saskatchewan. The thing came with weathertech floor mats, the privacy shade, all the "case candy", winter and summer wheels, and even the OEM roof racks I could never find for my last wagon which made me happy.

    20191020-130311.jpg

I had already been hoarding up some parts on the classifieds in anticipation for the car arriving and have a few goodies on the way or ready to go. The car finally showed up here in good condition last week with some expired Ontario plates I threw on there to avoid unnecessary questions.

I don't hate these 17" ASA winter rims...

    20191101-083703.jpg

I forgot what it was like to drive one of these but it's such a familiar experience. Now owning a house with a garage and 2 other cars and having all the experience of what to do and not to do from the previous car, I have a lot more opportunity to take my time with this car and do it all right. I expect this motor is going to give out or need major repairs within the next year-ish just based on the amount of kms on it so my plans are to enjoy it relatively stock until then. If/when it does break down it will be time to beef up this engine. If there are still no problems a year from now I'll refresh the engine and start to up the power anyway. Until then it's going to be maintenance, reliability mods, appearance and interior work. Banjo bolts and catted uppipe gotta go! Expect another JDM front end swap in the spring or summer. Still trying to decide between going Rev A-C spec B front like last time or do a full Rev D.

Parts already on the way or waiting to be installed:

    Grimmspeed Uppipe

    Updated red-stitch STI steering wheel

    JDM double DIN

    JDM headlights

    Homelink mirror

    Spats

    Lots more to come.

  3. Hey sorry to bump this thread but I just want to wrap up the original question for anyone in the future as I was wondering the same thing. I was about to pull the trigger on a killer deal of $750cad for an entire set of 2017 STI seats (with the power driver's seat!) but after researching for a few hours it looks like the 08-14 STI seats will bolt right into our cars (I'm not talking wiring here at all) but the 2015+ seat rails are different. 2015+ STI seats will not physically bolt into previous years' bodies. You would have to custom fabricate some kind of adapter or drill out the rivets to swap the seat rails. This is in addition to doing whatever wiring work would be needed to get it all functional. Those seats look and feel so good I had to exercise extreme self-control stop myself from just buying them and trying to hack something together to make it work but the amount of work would just be too much for me at the moment.. Maybe I'll try some time in the future if I ever get such a good deal again.
  4. Well if you want lower than legacy height, you'll be lowering either. And I imagine suspension would be the easier way to go unless you're happy with stock lgt suspension and don't plan to upgrade it.

Sounds like the obxt is better mechanically. Or at least they already have the info to show you what you'd want. Leakdown and compression that is. I'd ask on either what all was done and why. I'm rebuilding my engine right now but also replacing a bunch of unneeded stuff. Group n mounts on engine and transmission, Shifter bushings, Extra seals, tgv deletes, clutch and flywheel. A lot of stuff I could likely get away with not.

Also what year obxt? Did the 05lgt still have the catted up pipe? I have awkwardly short arms so the 08/09 extending steering wheel was a desire for me. What about radio? Do they have the jdm swap? Do you care? An 08/09 with an aux port was enough for me to wait on that.

Also let me tell you. Having a car die a plane flight away from home in the middle of nowhere needing a trailer is both expensive and frustrating.

Haha yes that was the fate of my beloved 05 white lgt 5spd ltd wagon.. died too far away from home in the middle of nowhere and I couldn't get back to it for a few months because I was on a work course... :(

So turns out the wagon has a gimmspeed up and downpipe with an hks high-power exhaust + some kind of lowered suspension already but I haven't been able to get the info on that yet. I think I could live with the MPH cluster. The outback has an invidia catless DP with stock exhaust and group N engine mounts and some other reliability stuff as well. Both interiors are completely stock with no audio upgrades or anything. I'm planning to visit the OBXT next weekend but I think chances are high I'm going to buy that black wagon if it's still around by the end of the month (soonest I can get out there). Will post pics

  5. Someone finally put a deposit on the old 300zx tt I've been selling so that means I can finally get myself back into an lgt wagon. Time to make a move on the legacies I've been looking at! :D

There are 2 options I'm looking at seriously. Please help me make sure I don't miss anything.

There's a very low km black 05 5spd Ltd wagon 2 provinces over with 88k miles (American car) that had an engine rebuild for a bad turbo 2000kms ago. Paint is excellent but the interior is tan and I really want black so I'd probably be swapping it out. I think I might also swap the cluster to a Canadian one. Comes with turbo-back exhaust, waiting to hear if it was running a tune. I need to ask about the banjo filters to make sure I'm not rebuilding it again. Clean carfax.

Second option is a 195km black OBXT 5mt limited with a recent engine rebuild and lots of maintenance done with a tune at a reputable shop. Nice black interior and body is in ok condition, little bit of rust on the driver's door. Good compression and leakdown tests. This one is driving distance away.

Both are priced about equal and a little higher than I'd like at about 9500/10k cad but I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium if I'm getting what I want. I'm probably going to drive up and checkout the obxt but I'd have to fly out to the wagon. My intent with the obxt would be to lower it to slightly under legacy height. Anything to pay particular attention to or questions to ask on either so I don't screw myself?

  6. So just a quick question regarding lowering an OBXT to Legacy height or an inch or so lower (not slammed by any means). Can I do this just by removing the struts and installing coilovers or is there a lot more required? I see if you go with the struts and springs method it seems to be a lot more involved but can I just swap in some BC coilovers and be done with it (and achieve proper alignment)? I was originally looking for an LGT wagon but there's a nice OBXT that popped up around here and I'm considering buying it and lowering it instead and I'd like to get an idea of the work involved.
  7. So as a follow up to this I've been looking at a few different years of cars and it looks like from factory every year from 05-07 has a different guage cluster. 05 is white, 06 is red, 07 gets replaced by the trip monitor screen from the right side which gets replaced by a fuel economy guage. There's some legacy trivia for you! :p
  8. If it's the original engine, wouldn't be surprised if it needed a refresh soon for things such as headgaskets, oil seals etc. Could get expensive fast.

I cringe at any used turbo 4th Gen with over 125k miles and the original motor and turbo. Failures at 100k and below are becoming much more common too as some of those cars may have just as many hours of run time in city miles. I have been part of this forum long enough to see the monthly parade of new owners with blow motors and the local ad with 2005-2009 LGT/XT with blown motors. I am pretty sure the reason used LGT/OBXT EJ255 motors are so expensive is because of the demand for them.

You have had good luck with your 4th Gen's, obviously you were on top of the turbo failures before they cause any long term damage. Not every used car seller has taken that good of care of their vehicles.

Yeah this is kind of my thought process as well.. With these higher mileage (over 200kms/125miles) I'm probably only going to look at the ones that have had some type of engine or turbo refresh/tune-up or are in exceptionally good shape. Autocrossing a high mileage engine gives me the willies so I'll pass this one up. Glad to have a pre-purchase section on this forum to bounce questions off of :)

  9. Is yours a manual or auto? If auto that price makes sense. If manual, interested in selling? If so PM me the details I've been looking for a replacement for my wagon since it died on me. As for the turbo mine went out at 233k on my last car and I hear that seems to be the time around which most of them will need a replacement that's why I ask.
  10. I'm looking at an 05 black limited 5spd sedan with some nice stage 2 mods that seems reasonably well taken care of. The only thing is it's currently still on its original engine and turbo at 233k kms. I'm thinking even the best maintained vehicles must be pretty close to a turbo replacement at this point? The guy said he also autocrossed it a couple of times over the last 2 years. He's asking 6500, I don't think I'd go above 5000. I know it's difficult to answer this question definitively but if the car was well maintained is it possible this turbo/engine will last much longer (another year/20k ish) or am I looking at a car that's going to need a turbo replacement soon?
  11. Here are some pics. I'm liking the mileage but there are some things on there that just throw me off like that lettering, the fact that the headlights are black not silver like the 06s (unless he painted them when clearing) and that fuel door. He said the fuel door cable broke and that's why it looks like that. Anyway I might check this out this week. Gonna get the carfax too.

  12. This legacy I'm interested in has red lettering on the dash. It made me do a double take because my Legacy when I owned it had white lettering. Anyone seen this before? He says he didn't change it but it sure doesn't look stock to me..

Also it's supposedly a 2006 Legacy GT Limited Wagon in 5spd. I always thought they made the wagons all automatic after 2005? Wondering if there is fishiness going on here :icon_mad:

Too bad too because almost everything else about the car is nice except for the atlantic blue colour I don't like..

    657635045_ad_7_1566024587879(1).jpg.e438b47f3a3e327cb49ecf3b86405a47.jpg

  13. Ok so I went and checked out an 05 5spd Ltd wagon with 205kms. Great condition body, no rust whatsoever I could see, car pulled strong, didn't seem to have any issues I could find except for a very cracked windshield (common here), body panels looked good except the owner only had it for 3 months and is looking to get rid of it. Now here's what gets me: it has a downpipe and seemingly no other upgrades including no tune. I don't think that's too much of an issue. The interior was the black leather interior of a gt limited but there was no sunroof and the driver's seat was manual not powered. Did they make a variant like that in 2005? I was 100% certain all leather models had a sunroof and powered seats. The last thing was that I was thinking I could maybe hear a clicking coming from the engine at idle. Not the rattle can turbo about to die sound but I thought there was maybe a subtle clicking. Might have been in my head though. Everything felt ok driving. What is really making me consider this car is the price is good $5500cad, comes with an uninstalled invidia q300 and the body was clean clean clean no rust not even on the fender quarters. At that price I can customize everything the way I want except for lack of sunroof. Thoughts?
