  1. I didn’t go much until they found thyroid cancer…I don’t go for minor things lol. Progress sorta, the optima he “borrowed” from me charged last night, check voltage after work today and it was down to 7. So needs a battery. Used a donor from the firewood truck and once in, ignition on, fans and relays doing there thing. Unplugged green plug, they stopped. Did it again to verify….same. The good news is it threw a code….P0340-camshaft position sensor. It had no code before. Are those cleanable to test it, until a new one can be delivered? Are these cars notorious for needing oem parts? (My jeep is finicky so I hear) Again, many thanks
  2. That is rad. I have legit occupational hearing loss, I hear no high pitches anymore…fairly annoying…and also from the interior damage, positional vertigo or something like that. Not allowed on motorcycles anymore…or tall ladders…that is good for work though lol Speaking of can’t see it, I now have bifocals on top of terrible eyesight.
  3. Nice, with that many you will auto rock the car seat lol. I’ve been out of the really loud stuff for a long time. I run a single jl audio 12 in a sealed box and 500watt amp, I think the same as yours but only a single output, in my xterra. It shakes the mirrors but I’m not supposed to do that as I have hearing loss…oops.
  4. Ha, nice. I better not show him that or he’ll get ideas..he’s only running dual 12s on 250 watt amp….enough to cause an issue with a wonky alt I’m sure.
  5. Glad you are here to help! I will be removing all that stuff tonite, unplugging the connector and seeing how it cranks, clicks, etc. Sounds like he should get the alt tested at the least but add a high voltage one. I told him not to use the capacitor, but what do I know lol. He’s learning the hard way…
  6. This did happen after he installed an amp and capacitor…not right away, but….
  7. Would the fans and relays be acting funny though? I’ve never had that happen with a bad alternator…but that only happened once in a 81 Toyota up…
  8. Awesome, thanks. I located it last night and the two green plugs were plugged in. As far as we both know it has been plugged in since we’ve had the car. Unless someone did something he doesn’t know about. I forgot to say the car just died while he was driving. battery should be charged by the time I get home tonite.
  9. That is interesting. Car was dead so the battery is charging….next step sounds like I should look for a service manual to find those wires. thank you much!
  10. Hi everyone, been a while since I’ve been on. My son ended up with the car, naturally being hard on it….it now won’t start. I don’t have all the info yet as I need to poke my head in but I do know when the key is on the on position, the fans turn on for around 4 seconds, turn off for 4 seconds for as long as the key is on…there is also some ticking that does similar. Un hooking the battery for an hour did not reset anything. I know that is vague but I’ll put the code reader on and see if anything comes up after work. I’m not the best troubleshooter and he has little money to throw at it, so I am hoping someone knows of things to try or maybe it’s just a “get a new ecu”. Thanks, appreciate your time…
  11. Fans not turning on, temp gauge stays in about middle lowish, radiator will steam a bit at the fins after a bit. Fans turn on when A/C is turned on. Thought I would ask for tips/advice on troubleshooting sequence while I look for info...thanks!
  12. Looking for budget freindly roof rack for my 99 sedan. Not really needed for a lot of weight, but my put some 4 or 5 in rally type lights on it. Any info is much appreciated! Thank you.
  13. I am installing a single din in my 99 legacy sedan SUS. It has the amp and 6 cd changer. The change is dead so is getting eliminated, but can the amp still be used with the new stereo? If I can find a wiring diagram I'm sure i can figure it out but i can't find one so any help is appreciated! Thank you!
  14. Thanks! The heads will get tested and valves/seats lapped sincec its apart...assuming there are no major issues. I've not dealt with burnt valves so not exactly sure the signs, but they all seam unifirm... will post pics when I have good service...at home it sucks lol.
  15. Thank you for the info, very helpful! I was trying to upload a pic so this did not post yesterday. I did drive it home, it stayed under halfway...I assume in the normal ish position. Once at home and at idle it started rising so I shut it off. It is currently in pieces in my garage, my spring compressor and new straight edge on got delayed in the mail so now I wait. Heads go to the machinist next week to check for wear, cracks etc., surfacing as needed. Once I now it's good I'll order up gaskets and see what happens. the cylinders looked good, nice hatching still, and nothing looked burnt, worn etc. Head gaskets had some wear indicating leak spots, but I dont think it has overheated often. Cylinder one misfire code came up, I'm guessing from coolant getting into it.
  16. Thank you, I see that more and more for the 25d, I wasxforgetting the "d" and getting the wrong advice.
  17. Hello. Need to order head gaskets and have confused myself on which one I need.waiting for subaru to get back to me and they are taking forever. Am I correct that I need 11044AA642? That is the updated gasket...thanks.
  18. Any updates? I will be doing heads on a 2.5, but am now debating doing more....
  19. Hello, I may be getting a 1999 legacy sedan sus 30th anniversary 2.5liter, automatic to repair...for free. 150,000, overheated. I'm a decent mechanic but horrible troubleshooter lol. I dont know alot about subarus but I have seen remarks here and there about good and bad motors, transmissions, etc. I would love some info on this car, like if it's a good one to save or not, good place to purchase gaskets, parts, etc. Do you think it is ok to drive for 30 miles home? No water in oil, was holding water idling to temp and then held temp for 20 minutes. Thank you, appreciate your help and thoughts.
