KPMunster
Well I'm 16 and this is my first time on a forum and my first car (red). Bought it for $500 and has 170,000 miles and I also just picked up a parts car (silver). I believe it has about 93,000 miles. It doesn't have a title so i'm wanting to make it kind of just a toy. Will start and run but only drives forward. Doesn't make any type of clanking or grinding when shift into reverse, so any idea of any easy cheap possible fixes? Keep in mind I am not highly educated with mechanics but do know some of the basics. Also, any tips for a new subie owner?

Hemingway
Congrats ... good choice for a first car and learning the basics of car maintenance (older Subies are easy to work on). Welcome to the forum!
KPMunster
It drives really well, The reason I got such a good deal is kinda funny. The owner had it sitting for about a year because he had another car that he drove. So he decided he didn't need it so he put it up for sale. it was parked at the bottom of a hill and he tried to take it for a drive and it didn't have the power to go up it. Turns out that there was a rat that lived in the airbox. So i bought it and stuck a filter in it and drove it home. It still ran slightly rough so i did the normal maintenance such as spark plugs and oil change and it didn't help much, a couple months ago, I heard about Seafoam cleaner, put some in and after a bunch of white smoke from the exhaust, it ran great. And sorry, i'm keeping the engine cover lol

Unfortunately, like I said, I am 16 and don't really have a good job, so a lot of the money I do get goes to other more important things. A lot of what i'm doing is swapping better pieces from my parts car to mine. But thank you anyway
KPMunster
Also, on donor car, there is one of those huge exhaust pipes, what are your thoughts of putting it on mine? Good? Bad? Ugly?
Cyclonus
Ya the wheels are kind of pricey, if that muffler is still good (still packed with sound deading) i say why not
Cyclonus
do you have a picture of the muffler? do you know if its bolted on or welded?

monkeyposeur
Welcome to the site! You are lucky. You are the owner of not one, but two of the best body style, pre-facelift leggys ever produced. If you want to boost one for more power its a piece of cake if you have some parts laying around. Notch your xmember, swap on a vf11, run an oil and coolant line, and you can run 5 psi w/no engine management. Or swap a vf11 or TDO4, XT tmic, swap a few wires, run a 22T ecu w/mbc and you could run 10-12 psi till the cows come home. (or detonation) Or just do a timing belt and stuff and still rally the crap out of them. WRX wheels are sweet on first and second gens and a cheap option if you search around. As a fellow first gen enthusiast I suggest you check out bbs: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/ everything you will ever need to know is posted there and then some. KPMunster
Its been a while since iv'e been on. anyway, I looked at my exhaust and it's a bolt-on, but I think i'm gunna stick with the one already installed. The previous owner said it's from a dodge neon. Got pics of both anyway.
KPMunster
Also, a couple of things i did. Swapped the "SUBARU" bar with "LEGACY", i think it makes it a little better. Swapped the old wiper arms for some less rusted ones and also swapped the back seats with one in better condition.

KPMunster
And last, (my least favorite part), The Problems. As far as problems go, there aren't any noticeable mechanical ones other than a small oil leak, other wise only rust. Also, one panel was damaged and one of the previous owners tried to screw it and the bumper together. I also wanted to bring out that I will not be turbo charging the car. Why? 1st, too expensive. 2nd, I don't want to put it in an automatic car, something just seems weird about that to me.
Cyclonus
clean up those rust spots with rust encapsulator, I think your right about the muffler the one on the silver car looks to be toast. boost is very expensive, i'm having to replace my tranny case cuz my front diff 'jumped' out lol
