Scariest Race Car Ever

I think that honor really belongs to the Porsche 917 especially in its later forms of development. Those cars made between 1100-1200hp and would top out at just north of 260mph. Some very well known, very talented drivers were terrified of them.

Sure. The 917 was faster, but take another look at the seating position in the Shadow. It would be like sitting in a go-cart at 200 with no real protection. In the 917, you sat down inside almost like in a modern F1 car.

looks like a go-kart with wings.

There's a "shadow" autox car from BC, Canada that used to come down and dominate the autox in Western Washington. Built by a couple of Aeronautical Engineers (caps intentional) with access to a wind tunnel and lots of computer power. Was said to make usable grip at 30mph and generate more downforce than they could hold on to.

Any of the Group B cars are good candidates - they were banned for a reason.

But the top of my list is "Babs":

It's an old video. From what I remember when it was 1st posted, him or a friend where to tighten down the bolts after swapping tires. The bolts were placed on the ends of the studs but they forgot to tighten down. All it took was a few turns to knock them off.
My wife's balls are delicious.

I had that happen to me once when I had a car with knock-off wheels. I replaced the wheel bearings and installed the left hub on the right and vice versa. Knock-off hubs are designed to tighten with normal driving. Reversed, they tended to loosen with normal driving. Sounds like a Peter Egan story, doesn't it. LOL.

If you read about it he bought aftermarket lugs offline which apparently had a different thread and they just slid off I guess.

That seems to be correct - the car was riding OK until all four wheels were lost simultaneously. Forgetting to tighten them will only cause the left side to lose it.

Using excessive torque - well, it's possible but only if you really overdo it.

As for scariest ever - well, it would be a shocker to realize that your wheels have left you naked, but it won't scare the shit out of you like them old race cars of the 20's and 30's where the slightest mistake or failure would lead to instant decapitation or death in a fire.

1999 Mercedes CLR-GT1 LeMans Car. Unexplain aerial launch 3 times in 1 weekend. 2 times with Mark Webber driving, the third time during the race with Peter Dumbreck driving. See it here. The car was never to race again and all but 2 were destroyed.

"unexplained" is to exaggerate - it acted too much like a wing which only required a small amount of air to wedge in under the car at a bump and "woha!" - airborne!

Not very different from what killed Senna - relying too much on ground effect.

Well yeah, I guess I didn't really mean "unexplained", they know and we know what happened, but it was more of a fatal flaw in the design that despite some very good designers, was overlooked and reared its ugly head in the real life situation vs. in simulations and CFD.

Kudos to you for remembering the quotes from drivers in the 917 at Le Mans.

"Belief does not make truth. Evidence makes truth. And belief does not make evidence."
