Occasional no boost

Recommended Posts

I have the 5eat transmission. Ever since I've had the car several years back and 38k miles I've noticed that the engine occasionally tends to rev up to 3-4k RPMs but seems to have no power. At first I thought maybe the transmission isnt up shifting. After I installed the boost gauge I realized that there was no boost. When this happens I usually let off the gas completely, then get back on the gas and it seems to be fine. It only does this ocassionally and I only notice it when accelerating from a complete stop. It happens infrequently but when it does it is annoying. You hear the engine rev up but the car doesnt pull as it should.

If I punch it from a stop the car accelerates.. boost comes up just fine. It will only happen when accelerating moderately.

Any ideas what could cause this? I've come to accept this as a quirk, design issue but maybe it isnt.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

completely stock right? no mods... I want to say this is an ECU mapping behavior issue which could be tuned out but waste gate could be stuck open too. there is a collar that can break off the shaft and drift the wastegate arm up to jam itself - I'm not sure that's it though from your description.

I'm still thinking a stuck open wastegate... unless anyone else chimes in here that I am out of my mind (which I could well be), it might be worth a look. You might be able to try and move the actuator or better pop the c-clip (and don't drop it) and see if the wastegate moves freely. Ignore the adjustment advice in this picture and DON'T touch it when it's hot. You'll need to remove the heat shield.

iNVAR, To be honest, i have zero experience pulling data logs from the ECU. I just have a scanner that pulls codes and reads real time data for some parameters. I'll have to look into those cables. Whats an LV?

Any suggestions on where to get these things?

Thanks.

You're in LA, there's gotta be someone around you that can help you pull a log and LV. Otherwise, check the Tuning subforum and look at the top of the stickies. There's info there about how to log and pull LVs.

An LV and log are super useful diagnostic tools.

Are you certain that it isn't the transmission slipping on you? Remember that if your trans is slipping, you won't make boost because the engine doesn't make boost without resistance on it. Similar to revving the car in neutral.

Have you drained and filled your ATF yet? Might be an inexpensive thing to eliminate the trans as a factor.

I'm probably due for a drain and refill on the transmission since its been about 30k miles but this has been happening since I got the car 38k miles ago. When I last did the drain and refill I did it 4 times. The fluid was nice and red by the 4th time, and it looks fine now. I also replaced the spin on filter.

The car still accelerates but it feels like its gutless. It reminds me of my 82 chevy cavalier with its 86 horsepower engine. And as i mentioned it doesnt happen consistently.

Hmm. Doesn't sound like a trans fluid issue then.
