Warwagon97
Hey everyone! Well, at long last i was able to get a Subie, a car I've wanted for a long time! Got it from a dealer w/135K for around 3K. It's got it's warts and scars from being an older car but it starts, runs and looks fairly decent. NOT looking to modify it in any way other than keep it running as long as I can. I checked the forums and see that Oil leaks aren't uncommon. By coinicidence, it's got one, only had it for a few days and haven't had a chance to check up on it. The main issues I'm worried about are the timing belt and head gaskets. I have NO clue when if or when the belt was changed. Is that something that I should plan for ASAP? I know the signs to look for with a blown head gasket so I take it that it's something to keep an eye out for? Any guidance anyone would have for me would be great! Thanks!! scoobsnacks
At minimum for of mind I'd pull the timing belt cover off and inspect the belt, the sooner the better. Might as well take it a step further and replace it since you're that far.

Warwagon97
Scoob, thanks! That's pretty much what I figured. Mike, It's a 1997 Legacy L.
AZP Installs
Scoob, thanks! That's pretty much what I figured. Mike, It's a 1997 Legacy L. Ok since it's a 97 L, I would start with the following: Timing Belt Kit Service 30k service (basically on a non-turbo subie, every 30k is the same routine major service) Spark Plug Wires (not usually included in the 30k) If you look under the services->maintenance section on our website you can see what is usually good for a 30k service. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts.
