PINESMOKER
So my neighbor just gave me a 98 Subaru legacy gt 2.5 5spd. He said it has tranny problems. So he says it hard to get in gear and your lucky if you can find them if you do. So my question to you guys and gals. Are tranny problems common? Is there something he might over looked? Linkage throw out Anything I should be testing or checking before ripping the trans out? Any thing helps since I'm new to Subaru's
jp71ss
Might check the bushings on the shifter. The way they look that seems like it could make it difficult to get into gear.
monkeyposeur
Check tranny fluid level if you haven't already.
spooln30
Could be quite a few things. Bad synchros inside the trans, worn shift forks inside the trans, a weak clutch slave or master cylinder, weak pressure plate springs or throw-out bearing or worn shifter bushings. Start with the cheapest and easiest, the shifter bushings. GL.
PINESMOKER
So started to really check this trans out and found a lot of play in the front carrier I think a bearing failed. Trans oil is black and burnt with a lot of metal flakes...another 5SPD bites the dust.
