dvancleve
Howdy folks, seems like this is probably covered somewhere but I couldn't find it. I know about the Legacy Bilstein, Koni and KYB struts/shocks, but are there any other good non-coilover options? In the KYBs, OB folks seem to prefer the '05 fronts paired with the '04 rears. Is that also the case for Legacys? Thanks, Doug
AZP Installs
That pretty much sums it up. I'm a big fan of the Konis as they are adjustable to suit your setup and driving style and carry a lifetime warranty. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. dvancleve
Thanks Mike. I would be doing an Outback XT which complicates things a bit since I would need some regular Legacy front struts if I went with Konis... Any opinion on 04 vs 05 KYBs if I couldn't swing Konis or Bilsteins? Happy New Year, Doug
AZP Installs
Oh, an Outback. I that case the Bilsteins and Konis won't really work for you. You will want OB specific KYB GR2s. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. dvancleve
Mike, it would be an Outback that I want to lower to Legacy height so regular Legacy struts. I am just curious about 04 vs. 05 back struts, most seem to prefer the earlier ones on the later cars. Thanks again, Doug

I hear the earlier ones are stiffer but we haven't noticed it yet on any we have installed. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Impatient
dvancleve, if you are talking about a 05-09 Outback, the aftermarket KYB (05 fronts / 04 rears) are harsh. Fun, but harsh. Or maybe, Harsh, but fun, in a S&M sort of way. If your roads are smooth, track kinda smooth, then no big deal. Or maybe if you load your car down much of the time. But there really ought to be a better option. I'm still searching. No Koni experience. re Bilstein, I'm thinking spec B are for soft springs, and HD's are probably a bit stiff. I don't track but drive a bit aggressively. In other words, no easy answer.
Rester5350
I just did the Koni/Epic swap on my 06 OBXT. Much lower than stock! I still have to swap out the rear bump stops and I am sure there will be more things to replace.
dvancleve
Just to clarify, you are talking about the KYBs intended for an Outback? I understand that the 05/04 combo is preferred for stock OB height. I am wondering about KYBs for a Legacy GT (that would lower an OB), still 05/04 or is that unique to OBs? Update: I just figured out that Tokico sells a high end adjustable strut set as well, the HTS (same/similar to D-Spec) that sometimes are much cheaper than Koni or Bilstein.
