LegacyGTurbo
Ok so for about a week now my LGT has been smelling like burning rubber when i turn on the heat and have the bacon (vent) open. It doesn't start to smell til 10 minutes later. And it only smells when I have the vent on open. But when it's closed you can't smell it. My guess is that something must be burning from or rubbing from the engine bay somewhere. But exactly where is unknown. Has anyone run into this before? What are the possible causes of this burning smell? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thanks. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q174/truthyaj/87A6F475-CB4B-4683-AA6B-53EC9B3DC30E-1088-0000010B2E856B7B.jpg
nyc lgt
Thanks for posting this. I am experiencing the exact same thing. I have a long drive coming up for christmas, so will be taking car into dealer this week to see if they can identify the source of the smell. Will post back here if they find anything conclusive, but I suppose it could be any belt or rubber component. Sorry to not have any suggestions, but I will write back here this week. It is very common for cars with 50k+ miles to have the inner CV boot dried up due to the heat from the Turbo being right there. After it is dried out it cracks and then you get grease being flung up onto the DP which in turn burns off slowly and you smell it as burning rubber. I would start there and see what you turn up. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. nyc lgt
Mike- That is exactly what the dealer said was the cause. Replaced the CV boot and drive belts (had not had this done in a couple years). I have not driven it enough to see if the rubber scent is gone, but your prediction is exactly what they fixed. Great to read about your shop. Next time I need something with a bit more time, I will definitely consider heading out your way. Hope this helps the original poster in some way.
