2012 Legacy GT rim/tire question

I'm new to Subaru and I'm picking up my LegacyGT tomorrow, but for the NY winters I think I will need winter tires and I just feel that its easier to have a second set of rims. I'm okay (prefer) going small 17" or even 16".

What rim/tire options fit my car without messing anything up. (Speedo for example)

I have 16" winter tires and rims leftover from my flood totaled BMW 325I. Will they fit?

Thanks,

Josh

16 inch wheels will not fit over the brakes. If you're looking to make a quick/easy decision, TireRack has winter wheel/tire packages that they advertise. They recommend 225/50R17's for the 5th gen GT.

http://www.tirerack.com/snow/WinterPackageMain.jsp?autoMake=Subaru&autoModel=Legacy+Sedan&autoYear=2012&autoModClar=2.5GT+Limited

The preferred package is some 17x7.5 Sport Edition A7 silver rims with some studless snow and ice Bridgstone Blizzacks (WS70). TireRack can also add the TPMS, mount, and balance your your new snowshoes for an additional cost.

Even if you want to go in a different direction, I found it to be a good starting point to work from if you're trying to keep your overall tire diameter consistent to stock.

Thanks I do love TireRack. But i noticed in the faq on this forum they talk about more than just 17x7.5 and tire size. They mention things like offset also and they don't seem to talk about the 2012 Legacy.

Your stock 5th gen GT wheels are 18x7.5 with a +55 offset.

Use this link to find the equivalent size to make sure you aren't losing inner side clearance, or pushing the wheel out too far toward the outside of the car.

http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

For example, compared to stock specs, a 17x7.0 wheel with a 49 offset has the same exterior dimension (they both "stick out" from the car the same distance), but gives you 12mm more inner clearance.

Next, make sure your tire size has the same or close to the same overall diameter as stock so that your speedometer isn't thrown off. Stock size is 225/45/18. Use this link:

For example, a 205/55/17 has basically the same overall diameter as a 225/45/18.
