soloz2
The last few weeks my car has been making a rotational squeak. It really began as the weather warmed up. It started only at speeds above 45, but now will happen around town and in parking lots where I am only driving about 5-15MPH. I believe the noise is coming from the front driver wheel. I have taken both drivers side wheels off to inspect and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary. I am not detecting any play in the wheel bearing and minimal play in steering. After putting everything back together I didn't hear the noise for several days before it came back. The noise seems to occur most frequently while turning slightly to the left or going straight at higher speeds. It seems to go away if I turn the wheel right or to the left more sharply. My initial thought was wheel bearing, but I replaced both front bearings since owning the car the last year and a half. Any other thoughts, or could it be the bearing again? I used an OEM Subaru hub, but didn't get it replaced by the dealer. Is there any warranty on the parts? TheOneDoubleN
And how are your brake pads?
soloz2
I haven't taken the brakes apart, but I have plenty of pad left. I installed Centric rotors and Stoptech pads 12 months ago. They now have 9k on them. My front calipers were a bit rusty so i greased them up best I could and planned to replace them when i had some spare money. TheOneDoubleN
I ask because an unevenly worn rotor or pads can cause what you're describing and would be an easy fix if it were the issue, but it's only one of many, many possibilities. As with most "noise" posts, you're probably best off just taking it in to get it looked at instead of getting 20 different guesses here that will probably be wrong in the end... It sounds like a caliper not fully retracting or a bearing. I would have someone local take a listen. -mike http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpghttp://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/141039922.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. soloz2
I paid attention to the noise instead of turning my music up louder... I also applied the brakes several times just to see if there was a difference as I normally coast and don't use my brakes much. The noise doesn't start for a few minutes, until warmed up. And stops immediately when any brake pressure is applied. soloz2
Well, I got off work early today and waited for it to stop raining... it's still hot and muggy, but at least it's not raining! I just pulled the pads off my front driver's side and the pads look fine, but I think I need to buy new front calipers... http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb393/soloz210/20120525_151412.jpg http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb393/soloz210/20120525_151421.jpg Current: 16 Crosstrek Premium w/ Eyesight & 05 Outback XT 5MT Past Subies: 14 FXT Premium, 14 WRX hatch, 06 Legacy 2.5i SE 5MT, 98 Outback wagon

soloz2
Thanks for the help guys. I did some reading and opted to reserve a pair of front calipers from Napa. They came to about $62/ea after I get my core fee back. I know I have some brake cleaner, but will probably pick up another can while I'm there. I also grabbed some Permatex Ultra Disc Brake Caliper Lube today. Is there any better grease/lube for calipers than this? I hope to do the install next weekend. The weather report shows that it should be partly cloudy and mid 60's which will be perfect as I don't have a garage. Much better than the 91 it was today! I'm going to call Por-15 tomorrow to see when I could expect to get their caliper paint kit if I order direct tomorrow morning. If it won't be here in time I'll probably just grab a black Duplicolor kit from amazon as I have prime and I'll get the kit Thursday so I can paint the calipers before installing them. soloz2
Replaced my calipers yesterday, changed out brake fluid and rotated my tires. So much better now. The brake pedal feels slightly different, could be the different fluid or my imagination I suppose.
