m sprank
Another engine that failed catastrophically for your viewing pleasure. 2005 STi (EJ257). Engine was previously built by another shop. They like to paint their work (rather than clean it well enough you dont need paint) and they like to use ACL/Orbit oil pumps. Well, this engine appears to have had an oil issue. At this point we have at least one snapped rod (an unknown brand h beam using ARP 2000 hardware)and some bent valves. I wont know more until I disassemble completely. Each head has a freeze plug applied and the block did too. But the block freeze plug came off with one of the holes that opened up in the block. I found the extra freeze plug in with the extra metal. I wonder if that counts as "removal" and voids the warranty??? Hope your weekend goes MUCH better than this engines week went. Be safe and have fun.
Rhitter
Installed a set of Fortune Auto coils and Cusco rear lower control arms on this 2017 WRX today. What are your thoughts on Fortune Autos are the cheaper ones trash? Or do the work well enough? (ie, some level of comfort and performance) My Bilstein HDs are getting older and debating Fortune Autos or HD rebuild. My OBXT build
m sprank
^ I dont sell the brand. I have had customers with warranty issues. 2011 STi. We found the inboard, right/front cv bearing/cup to be out of spec. This was causing an odd vibration at 70+mph under acceleration. Replaced the axle and seal and the vibration is gone. m sprank
A small and quick project from today. Installed a Perrin rear sway bar and end links on this 2015 WRX today. Also performed an oil change on a 2015 Outback and a 2017 Outback, checked out a 2007 STi for boost/knock/AFR, smoke tested/repaired vac leaks/replaced a faulty AFR sensor/oil change in a 2004 Forester XT and drained the fuel/filled with fuel and swapped out a failed AFR sensor on a 2015 BRZ. Busy day of smaller projects on multiple cars.

m sprank
They never should have stopped making this one. I would be driving one if I could find a good example to build.
m sprank
2018 WRX STI RA. What appears to be the final Ej257 STi. I am sure they will get the $50k asking price. Is it worth it? Something to ponder over the weekend. https://www.subaru.com/2018-wrx-sti-ra
m sprank
One broken rod, three bent rods and one damaged piston. At least the heads of this EJ257 were not damaged. The engine is now back in one piece and almost ready to be dropped back into the car. Should have this one started up by the end of the week. m sprank
Installed and testing this Turbosmart turbo oil feed pressure regulator today. This should alleviate our over oiling issue with the turbo, meaning no more smoke.
m sprank
Installed a new power steering rack, performed a 4 wheel alignment and more on this clean 2011 STi today. m sprank
A 2005 STi with a freshly rebuilt engine. Break in driving has begun and this car should be ready for customer pick up on Monday morning. The break in/base map on this car was provided by Steve Gerhardt, who will be completing the final tune after break in is done. Have a great weekend! m sprank
A 2011 WRX rolled into the shop today with smoke coming out of the tail pipe and the oil fill neck/dipstick. 18,740 original miles on the odometer. Living the Subie life can get expensive. Cylinder 2 and 4 are both in the 65-70psi of compression range now.
m sprank
Not quite a snow day. But, So Cal cold... hail storm at the shop this morning. We had most of the cars inside before it started to fall. The thunder gave us warning.
m sprank
A bad week for low compression banks on EJ255 engines. This 2007 Legacy GT SpecB came in on a tow truck. Car was in a drive through when it stalled and would not start. Skipped the timing belt (118k and the tensioner was a re-used original). Zero compression in cyl #1 and #3 once we reset the timing to test. New owner of the car. Supposedly the head gaskets were recently replaced. We see the signs of poor workmanship and low cost parts along with the re-used OEM timing kit. I attribute the failure to the previous work. Wonder why the previous owner put the car up for sale??? Its a buyer beware world, we do offer pre-purchase inspections.

m sprank
First he said, no. Package it up to be towed out. Today he asked for two estimates. His grandparents are willing to assist. We shall see. 2012 WRX put back to stock today (approx 90k). GS TMIC, Forge BPV, GS mstr cyl brace, Crawford AOS, GS 3 port EBCS, TurboXS down pipe, GS heat shield, Greddy CBE, Brembo front brake kit, Stoptech brake lines (all 4 corners), Cobb AP, Tein coil overs and more removed and replaced from this car today. Soon to be sold/traded in. A local owner left with a boatload of used aftermarket parts that should be hitting the "for sale" scene soon.
m sprank
Performed a timing belt service on this 2008 STi today. A standard timing belt service at Infamous Performance consists of: Replacement of the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, thermostat and a coolant flush. Service is recommended between 100-110k miles. We use all OEM components and fluids and the price is $800 parts and labor out the door.
m sprank
Today at the shop... Steve Gerhardt on the dyno tuning a MONSTER STi. Steve will be back tomorrow to complete this tune. So far Steve is up to 20psi (and north of 300whp/tq on the Mustang) and expecting to hit 32psi on ACN91 pump gas. Stay tuned...

m sprank
No. Precision 6266 Gen2 CEA. A 2013 STi that was in today for a boost leak. Found it, fixed it and the car is back on the road with its rightful owner. Gotta get back to the dyno, the monster STi needs a new oil control valve on one exhaust cam. It went "haywire" this morning on the dyno causing us to stop tuning. Cant risk having the cam advance far enough to make the valves contact the piston. Big cams and valves and we dont want to go over 40-42deg of advance. Plus the oscillating cam was causing the AFR to change. We should be back in business tomorrow morning and continuing with the tune.
m sprank
3 generations of STi in the shop being worked on today. 2015, 2012, 2007. The 2015 is being tuned (flex fuel) by Bill Knose on the dyno tomorrow. The 2012 is a continuing tuning project with Steve Gerhardt. Steve says, "it takes time to get to 42psi". Yup, but your already making 330whp at 15psi, lol.
m sprank
2015 STi. Stock turbo and TMIC (and clutch). Flex fuel supplied and tuned by Delicious Tuning (Bill Knose). The dyno graphs and the car. Very nice numbers on our heart breaker Mustang, especially with the stock clutch. 309whp, 407wtq on e60.
m sprank
If you can hear the throw out (release) bearing, its time to address the situation. If you can feel the throw out (release) bearing you are playing with fire. If you drive the car until the entire assembly grenades, you get to replace the transmission. Not enough snout left in this 2013 WRX to even attempt a repair. Not a good day for anyone involved.
