please help explain: 2006 legacy 2.5i SE stereo install question

I'm replacing the stock HU on my 2006 legacy wagon with manual climate controls. I'm using a crutchfield package and installing a double-din clarion with the provided new faceplate and installation accessories. Crutchfield mastersheet says that I must remove the climate control cable under the driver's side dash. I have located the cable, retaining clip, and the post on which it sits, but I simply can't remove it from the post. It seems this is required in order for me to pull out the entire stock unit and climate controls.

But I've also seen on this forum and elsewhere that people are able to remove the stereo without pulling out the climate controls. This [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_wmPo91kIM]install video[/ame], on a 2005, apparently demonstrates that.

Are the 2005 and 2006 stereo/climate control setups identical?

At around 3:15, he says something about a "metal thing...that's pretty obvious" that you need to unclip, but I simply can't figure out what he's referring to.

My questions: Is unclipping the climate control cable and pulling the whole thing out my best option? If there is a way around it, can someone clearly explain it? Here, for example, i don't really understand what Badmojo and aldouse propose: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/manual-climate-control-30235.html

There's also this, but what the h*ll is figure E showing, and how do I do that?
