SomethingWittyAsAUsername
A few weeks ago, I bought a 1995 Legacy L Wagon. It needed an alternator, but I got it for $900 with 208,xxx miles. My paint job is quite bad in some spots and it has a bit of rust and body damage, but it's not that bad. The only thing really wrong is the shifter. I have to guess where the gears are, since the guide is essentially gone. Also, in 3rd gear, I'll let go of the shifter and watch the knob move back about 3 inches when I hit the gas. What are some ideas as to what's wrong?
iSooby
Take boot off and see if the guide is even in there. If not. Get a new one
subikid90
There is a knuckle under the car between the trans and the trans housing. It is a big pain to get to but that is what causes the sloppyness in the shifter in this gen. To fix it you must buy a new knuckle from the dealer for about $70 IIRC. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
Frank B
The linkage and bushings are still available at the dealer, not a bad price either. Here's a pic I found online for reference, yours may be different since they changed it a little bit thru the years. http://turninconcepts.com/instructions/subaru/shifter_info/shifty_742a.jpg

wish
Mine isn't terrible, but I should replace the linkage in mine. Did the front stay bushings and an eBay short shifter(the $25 kartboy clone) and it helped tremendously
wish
Also the shifter return spring helps a lot with side to side slop and its like $1 from the dealer
