Elysian
I am going even more uncommon. I am going with a 99 EJ223 bottom end (Phase 2) and 99 EJ25D heads. It is possible to go the other way around but that usually lowers the compression making it ideal for boost. The combination of the block and the heads make up whether or not it needs to be changed. Subaru was weird with parts in the 90's, so it is entirely possible to never swap a crank pulley and it work with no issues. That makes sense. Dalee1104
Wait I thought a ej25 bottom end with a ej22 top end was a high compression build? Lol I have a spare 98 ej25 sitting around and I'm wondering what to do with it

The stock EJ223 block is already a 9.7:1 ratio. They have 3cc piston dishes compared to the EJ25 which has 25cc dishes. The EJ25D has a little smaller head chamber. Using a EJ223 head gasket, it'll boost the compression ratio to 10.5:
