subikid90
I have a few options for dohc heads, right? I know EJ20Gs would work great. What else would you recommend? S20's from an EJ205. It would give you the option of doing a wrx wiring merge and tuning power. This is the method I am going. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
monkeyposeur
I'll start keeping my eye out for a set.
legacyssturbofreak
if you get the 205 heads, you will have to get the intake manifold, injectors, tgvs, harness, and ecu. the advantage to this is open source tuning is easier. i would stick with 20g or 25d heads. the 25d heads will require turbo cams to run right. monkeyposeur
So what would I need to go along if I go with the 20g or 25d heads?
legacyssturbofreak
nothing as far as the 20g heads. the 25d heads will need 20g, 20k, or 205 cams. if you could find a 20g ecu and jdm 440 injectors, you would be set.
legacyssturbofreak
if you could score a 20g ecu as well as some jdm 440 injectors, you would be set.
monkeyposeur
Seems like 20g heads will be the easiest then. So I can hopefully just swap the ECU from the SS into my second gen. It was mentioned that if I use the up and down pipe from the SS that I will need to open source tune it. Is it still possible to open source tune it with the SS ECU? Why is open source tuning so much easier with a wrx wiring merge and 205 heads?
legacyssturbofreak
obd2 is easier to tune as far as subarus go. the wrx has a bigger market so more people have designed a tuning program for it. the only options you have for the stock ss ecu is robtune, apexi power fc, and megasquirt. legacyssturbofreak
you could run aem. i didnt list it because i am not a fan of their products.
SubaruNation
If you are just going to do open source stuff yeah a regular ECU is awesome. Some people will use Romraider as well. I really liked being able to see just about everything with the AEM, but it did require a lot of wiring to make it work.
monkeyposeur
The nice thing is that I don't have to decide on anything right now. The first step is getting that block out and inspecting it. I don't want to get too crazy with the HP since more HP is not always better if I don't know how to handle it. But thanks for all the engine management suggestions. As of right now I think that EJ20g heads, a piggyback engine management would be something that I should look into. Of course if EJ205 heads with the complete intake mani, etc., presents themselves then I would go that way. I might pull the suspension off the SS wagon as well. Was the stock suspension on an SS different than the non-turbos? Of course if the suspension has 150k, it might not be worth it, but might be useful to someone else. legacyssturbofreak
the valving on the ss struts are slightly stiffer.
monkeyposeur
Hey legacyssturbofreak, I'll be up in Seattle from March 21st to the 25th. If your SS is running it would be fun to see it and go for a quick spin!

monkeyposeur
It is kind of sad that I am going to pluck then engine out of this wagon and raid it for bits and then scrap it. Anyone want the leftovers? If it was more complete then I would save it.

monkeyposeur
Ok. Have any idea if the crossmember on my junk SS wagon will swap over to my second gen? If I can swap the up and downpipes over that would be cool.
SBT
It should since the Impreza is built off the 1st gen Legacy platform and the WRX is built on the 1st gen Impreza. Perhaps someone here has done it already, or you can find some P/N crosses on one of the other Subaru entusiasts' sites. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -

SubaruNation
If I remember right, the up pipe on these older lego's is the exact same size as the newer STI / HKS up pipe ...except that it is un catted so sweet mod for way cheaper.
