what type of tint to use to tint taillights?

NYS VTL 375-2a2

if manufactured prior to January first, nineteen hundred fifty-two, at least one lighted lamp on the rear which shall display a red light visible from the rear for a distance of at least five hundred feet;

 

NYS VTL 375-2a3

if manufactured on or after January first, nineteen hundred fifty-two, at least two lighted lamp on the rear which shall display a red light visible from the rear for a distance of at least one thousand feet

 

If you think your tail lamp is visible from 1000 feet (just under 1/4 of a mile) with your tints, then okay then... But in my experience, any tint that is worth having to make the car look good makes the tail lamps significantly darker, to the point where I can barely see it from 300 feet away.

Don't forget that means running lights, not brake lights. And "visible" is at the discretion of the ticket writer.
