Down Pipes, Cats, and Emission testing?

Hello All,

I just had a chat with a local tuner about tuning our "new" '08 OBXT 5MT. I think I am going to go Stage 2 right off the bat and he asked if I was thinking going catless or catted down pipe. I thought this was weird for the fact in the Audi world (been driving Audi's for 20+years) it is VERY common to get rid of the cats in the down pipes (there are cats farther back in the system) and either fool the ECU into thinking that everything is fine with either a tune or o2 sensor extensions, both of which I have had success with. The tuner mentioned that while he could "tune" out the CEL but he could not tune out the readyness code so the car will fail CT state emissions through OBDII, Is this true? Being a frugal Kraut I would rather buy a catless DP but if I have to worry every two years about failing our emission test then it will be a catted DP.

 

In some of the reading I have done it sounds like there is not much of a performance difference between catted and catless DP's. In the Audi world the first thing you do to free up some pretty substantial BHP is get rid of the cats in the down pipe.

 

I have a lot to learn about Subaru's.

By going with a catted DP you are still removing a cat as there are 2. You're also replacing them with a "High Flow" cat which is much less restrictive. How much the high flow cats actually do for emissions I don't know. Probably more of a placebo to make us feel better about our emissions. ;)

 

Oh yeah, not to mention that the DP you'd get is also less restrictive in that it doesn't have a blank plate with a small hole immediately post turbo. Search for DP images.

Thanks for the info. So, there are two cats in the down pipe and then one in the exhaust system? Not sure if I am read that correctly or not.

 

Do you have any experience with readiness reports for emissions?

There are 2 cats in the downpipe and 1 in the uppipe. None in the exhaust post-downpipe afaik.

For the 08 everyone is correct with the 2 cats in the DP. Subarus are a bit different than most as there are no tricks to make the system work. Just a proper tune which will change the specs of what the car likes.

 

A stage 2 is a nice set up and really opens the car up. We would recommend having an Access Port or tuner tune the car after installation. We don't know the laws in CT but a high flow cat doesnt really hurt performance by much and it is a no brainer when worrying about emissions. EFI Logics in CT are great tuners and I would highly recommend you give them a call and talk to Pete.

Copy that, as I mentioned I need to learn about Subaru's, after spending 20 years playing with Audi's I just expected everyone to be similar...LOL. I guess a catted down pipe is in order. I have read a bit about EFI and I will give them a shout .

I have a 08 Legacy GT with a aftermarket DP and still get a emission code (see my current thread http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/code-p0420-did-dealer-kill-my-cati-177548.html).

You can disable codes in Romraider and I believe I seen a function where you can force pass the I/M monitors.

 

I am not concerned with passing emissions where I live. I went with the catted to avoid a little more noise and possible drone in the exhaust system. Also, easier to sell or trade car when it has some appearance of passing emissions.

No. you need to disable the CEL p0420 under the trouble code list. force pass readiness is so that you can reset your ecu right before inspection if need be and still read Ready, it does not stop or delay CEL's from coming on. it's a separate entity.
