tripolitrx
Hi guys, I am considering buying a 2005 legacy gt imminently as i need a car pretty quickly. The car is 12k on a dealer forecourt and has just over 90k miles on it. Is this a decent price or is there room for negotiations? Also, the 90k does bother me some, what are the likely problems I should be looking for? is 90k alot for a legacy? I guess i just need to know about any nasties that could be waiting for me, ie turbo, head gasket, electrical gremlins, tranny...I would like to get at least a couple years out of this car Ive never had a Subaru before, had a couple of jags before this lol so its all new to me. The main factor i like about it is the AWD for the winter, and it looks bad ass in black on black Any advice is appreciated Trip

tripolitrx
Is that a costly job? What are legacys like for maintenance, is it wise to use a specialist of are they cars your local mechanic would be able to work with without too many problems? i see oil changes are a major to do on these GTs, I'm not overly optimistic the previous owners were changing every 3750 miles, are there signs i should look for that indicate problems on startup / idle? Ive read wheel bearings can be a problem to, what sort of indicators would there be for these problems? I plan on taking it for a spin tomorrow maybe, so would be nice to pay attention for any particular noises that could point to problems Thanks Trip
Drift Motion
at that point, be sure the timing belt/105k service is done or factored into the pricing then the turbo, maybe the clutch too?
tripolitrx
man I'm really in two minds about this car now, sounds like it could just be a money pit, from a quick google search i got a price for timing belts from 550 to 1000, and the turbo up to 3 grand :/ i suppose the main things for me to check are its had regular oil changes, timing belts, possibly a replaced turbo, if not, then walk away... Does the stock turbo have a general life span before it needs changed out? Ie 120k or something? Thanks guys, I appreciate your input
Drift Motion
I got my 105k maintenance done for 500 ish Turbo + downpipe + labor + tune for little over 1k
krzyss
Thanks for the info, shall look over that shortly, its a 5 speed:) heres the link http://www.choiceautosalesonline.com/newandusedcars/4103/1431363/4ae06715-42ad-4c3e-9bfd-2b842591dc4d/none/2005-Subaru-Legacy-Murrysville-PA-15668.aspx Both manual and automatic are 5 speed. The maintenance is the key. SOA changed the OCI (oil change interval) sometime in 2006 from 7500 to 3750 but now it is back to 7500 with synthetic. My 143K 2005 GT manual had front wheel bearings gone, AVCS solenoid gone. The clutch seems to be in need of replacement soon. Regular maintenance each 7500 miles using synthetic oils: Mobil 5W30 for first 60K and then Castrol Syntec 0W30. 60-45 miles one way commute mostly on highway. Max Capacity
Generally speaking, if you say 5 speed,( 6 speed, 4 speed) your taking about a manual tranny. To us grearheads, anything else is a automatic. And is called that. I replaced my vf40 turbo with a vf52 for $1030. Then had my Tuner dyno tune the car. That's about $400-500 depending... 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. rapture
clean but i'd say they are asking a bit too much. try to talk em down to like just under 10k.....and yeah i would do the timing belt just to be sure and get in there to see what everything else looks like....take it to a reputable mechanic that u trust (if u have one) get it on a lift and really check her out. whereabouts in pa is this?? tripolitrx
Thanks for the tips guys, my brother in law is quite handy with a spanner and knows a few guys also, so shall have him check it over also i think, he nearly got an impreza form the same place, but passed on it due to the clutch. it does look tidy, and cool, I like it the more i look at it, however I do have another car to check out now, a Mazda Speed 6, I'm guessing its over my meager budget though:( Although after driving by the dealer today, the scooby was gone (!) hoping someone took it for a test drive or something lol Its located east of Pittsburgh, i would try for 10...thing is they have another 2005 GT in silver with 103k on it for 10 grand, gonna be a hard haggle.... TrueWhiteBoy
Well, there are quite a few people who bought their LGT after driving/buying a MS6, so you're probably in the right frame of mind Is it a limited (leather, moonroof) or standard? What is the KBB of it?
