DP & Ceramic Coating

Guys,

I am considering having my CNT catted DP coated before install. The shop offers a silver coating or a black coating. The salesperson I spoke with described both as a liquid aluminum ceramic coating. He said the silver finish was easier to clean, and the black was a little more abrasive (his words). He also said the pipe will dissapate heat 3 times faster than an uncoated pipe. Price is good. Any reason I shouldn't do this? Which color would you go with?

Why do you want your DP to dissapate heat? The normal goal is the keep heat inside the pipe for:

  1. Better flow, hotter gases = flow faster
  2. Keep heat out of the engine bay

That is why people wrap their DP to keep heat IN the DP. Seems like you would be doing exaclty the opposite of what other people recommend.

A ceramic coating actually acts as an insulator in this type of application. So, it would promote better flow and keep heat out of the engine bay. The fact that it also dissapates heat more efficiently and evenly is a benefit. My primary reason for it was to keep temps in the engine bay down, and to help protect the axel boot on the passengers side which is only inches away from the DP. I believe headers are wrapped for the same reason.

In the past two hours I've done more reading which appears to confirm that the coating would be a good idea. My comment on heat dissapation was probably misleading. Thats not the reason for the coating, and was just something the guy at the shop mentioned. Looks like we all agree.

Ceramic coating is a great thing for keeping the heat contained in the downpipe and the coating also prevent the heat from heat soaking other components. We have done some testing on thermal coated downpipes and up pipes and could definitely see a difference.

Thermal coating is a very good alternative to heat wrapping. The issues with heat wrapping downpipes as well as manifolds is that it can become a potential fire hazard. Heat wrapping acts like a sponge soaking all oil and fuel.

I dropped my pipe off the next morning. Should be done in 5 days. I'm having the work done at Sanderson's Headers in So. San Fransisco. They offer black or silver finish. I went with silver. The guy told me the finish is durable enough to hit with a hammer without chipping. Two coats, baked on. Having the whole pipe done, bellmouth and all. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.
