Exhaust ???'s

Tripod

Recommended Posts

After reading a few posts here about "gutting" our stock DP's

I thought about a ? (I searched but found no answer).

Is it possible to "gut" our stock DP and then buy a

high flow third cat section only, and then leave the rest of the exhaust (from the third cat section back) stock?

My thought process here is: this would allow me to

maximize exhaust flow, allowing me to flash Stage 2,

but keep my quiet stock exhaust.

Good question, outside of going the custom route, I haven't seen any vendors selling only the midpipe w/ HFC. If you find something, let me know, I would be interested in doing the same thing.

I don't think your plan will maximize exhaust flow. First, I think this was in your other post, a gutted DP is just punching/poking all the stuff inside the cat. Does the DP have a sensor after it? You have to watch out if we have sensors or not. Some cars measure exhaust temps or flow so if there's nothing there then 1. the temps will be higher and 2. the flow will be more. It might throw a CEL.

As for replacing the stock "main" cat with a HFC, I'm not sure. Does anyone know how much "flow" a stock cat has compared to a HF one?

Finally, all the piping after the resonator is really really small. It goes from 2.5" piping to something like 1", Y's off and goes into our chunky mufflers. If you're looking for performance with no sound, i think a couple people are also trying to find that solution.. maybe keep the resonator? or see what's inside so it'll kill some of the sound but keep the performance aspects? and it'll be the choice of muffler you pick also. Mufflers muffle .. so picking something like an Apex'i N1 will definitely be loud but picking brand X might not.

Isn't stage 2 damn quick? I'd just go custom. I did a catback and it was less than 500$ and 1/4 of a saturday. Couldn't be happier as a driver and on the wallet.

But catback's are useless when considering going Stage 2.

They are also do VERY little to nothing in the way of performance

on their own. They are good for nice throaty sound.

But I like the stealth quiet quality of our cars.

HFC are supposed to be significantly more efficient than stock cats, but

are still legal.

The reason I'm interested in gutting the stock DP is so if you take it in

for service or return it on the lease, they won't necessarily know it's been

done. Especially if it looks and sounds pretty much like a stock LGT

Gutting a DP is free and a HFC midsection shouldn't run more than

a couple hundred bucks if someone sells just that section.

I already have the CAP and am running Stage 1

You could gut the stock DP, plug the O2 bung with a bolt, and have someone weld in a TurboXS high flow cat, which would take the place of the third cat. The O2 Sensor is relocated behind the cat on the TXS unit. No CEL for 10K. This however does not address the fact that you'll still have a blank plate DP, which is less than optimal for flow.

I however did not gut the DP, have the TXS DP. But it can be done.

OBAMA......One Big Ass Mistake America!
