smoke coming off the "downpipe"

I have an invidia catted high flow downpipe. Tonight I pulled into the driveway and noticed wisps of smoke coming out of the hood vent. I had been driving pretty hard on the way home but didn't notice until I let the car idle in the driveway.

I tried looking to see if there was anything spilled on it but the engine bay was pretty hot and all I could see was what looked like the downpipe had smoke or steam coming off of the outside. there are no holes in the downpipe or exhaust leaks.

The heat shield partially blocked my view. All vitals in the ecu and thermostats read normal. this is the first time I noticed it.

any ideas? could something have been sucked up under the engine bay and melted to it?

It didnt smell like oil. Kinda like plastic but not as stinky. Smoke was very white.

Axle boot. Hm. I did notice a bit of shimmy lately when i put the car in reverse. Not rumble strip magnitude though.

Is there a way to quickly tell? 75000 miles on the od.

Is this safe to drive on until i get an appointment if i keep it in limp mode??

I would bet that it is the cv boot as well. The heat from the down-pipe usually makes the boot prone to cracking. You can drive it awhile before you throw all the grease out of the boot. I would, however get it fixed. If you want to check it, crawl under the car and see if the cv boot has grease on it as well as the under side of the down-pipe. If this is indeed the issue, you will see the grease.

It's "safe" to drive, but I'd get it fixed ASAP. In general, you want to keep things that can burn off of pipes that can get very hot.
