05 GT Ltd. 110k Miles

Hey everyone,

I have been debating trading in my current daily driver for some time and recently came across a more than average number of LGT's available at quality dealers in my area. I came across a black 05 body style a few years back and just loved the look of them. I am basically looking for people's opinions on buying these cars with such high mileage (never owned a car over 110k miles).

Some info:

05 Silver Legacy GT Limited w/5 speed manual

~110,000 miles on the odometer

Exterior looks to be in great shape for the mileage

Interior looks just as good

ASKING PRICE $10,999 (GOOD PRICE?)

The car is currently at Subaru getting a major service (possibly 100k miles service?). Anyways the guy at the dealership told me that it is currently getting the valves adjusted and he will be getting back to me regarding whether the timing belt has been serviced yet.

What I am looking to get out of this car is to own a fun DD that see's ~7-8k miles a year. Will do some very light modding (exhaust, mild suspension, wheels/tires, etc.). From what I have seen on the car it is one stock and has simply been daily driven during ling commutes since it was first purchased.

Here is the actual link to the listing

Thanks for the help guys!!

Yo Mike, that looks like a decent ride! Considering the car fax comes back clean does indicate a good thing, of course never 100%. I would have a used-car checkup performed by an independently by another Subaru specialist close by, if possible, and have them perform engine test to validate the health of the engine/turbo. I would research the maintenance performed to make sure consistent oil changes (major fluid changes @ 30k, 60k, 90k, etc.) so that you can be fairly reassured that the car has been well maintained, which could save you some heartache down the road. What's even better is it's a manual transmission which can be a good thing ... howz the clutch? NOTE: I would also review any TSB's for this model year and validate any recall's and/or TSB's have been addressed. All these recommendations are for negotiating down the price :) If you can NEVER show all your cards with respect to your desire for the car, nor how much you can afford...keep them guessing :) I like to look out for the consumer when buying cars.

My two cents.

Thanks for the help....From what I have searched regarding TSB's there isn't much mechanical stuff that I could see providing an advantage during negotiating a price. One thing though would be the side curtain air bags recall. The carfax shows no report of this being done and it being a dealer than needs to do the recall work that should be on there. That might be a good thing to use since thats a major safety issue in the case of an accident. Haven't been able to test drive it yet. They had the car for 2 weeks and when I went in yesterday it was in the middle of a service. He said he'll call me back Monday letting me know the results of the inspection and info on timing belt. Would've liked for them to do a compression test and make sure the turbo is in good condition. IF the timing belt has not been replaced I will definitely being making an effort to take a good amount off their asking price since that service is not cheap.

I pretty much wanted to get people's opinions on the mileage of the car and the chances of it being good to me from this point on. I take great care of my cars but 110k+ miles in someone else's possession makes me nervous. For these miles is the asking price even good? I'd be interested to see what I should offer them going in there in the case of A) timing belt replaced, good compression, etc. and B) Timing belt NOT replaced but motor still in good shape.

I hear ya man it's always a gamble purchasing a car with 110k on it and it is high for this year of car, hence my desire for concrete maintenance records which is almost impossible to obtain unless it is a private sale. Here's my main concern...failed emissions on 4/9/2011. Me personally I never pick up a car that fails emissions...it means to me that something is not right with the car's engine or emissions management. Not sure of California law but here in Colorado in order to sell a car from a dealer legally it must pass emissions, all I know that the CARB is quite more stringent than CO. But ultimately the emissions WAS resolved maybe Livermore Subaru can give you more detail as to the problem.

That said bro I would still say take it to an independant shop and have them check it out, which in combination with the current dealer might give you a better piece of mind. Personally I walk into the dealer and consider that the car price listed is always negotiable :) I really like to use Edmunds.com "appraise a car" and kbb.com to fully get my flexible range when purchasing a used car. Good luck man and if you do make the decision I think that care will treat you right and it sounds like you will take good car of it as well.
