95/92 manual tranny swap?

Hi,

 

I have a 1995 5 spd Legacy wagon with a bad tranny. Motor turns and clutch works but car won't go. It had some gear grinding sounds for a while whenever we let off on the gas before failing completely.:icon_sad:

 

I have a good 1992 tranny than seems to be almost identical, though I haven't yet been able to confirm that.

 

Both cars had the same motor. 2.2L H4 SOHC 16V

 

Tranny numbers:

TY752VA2AA (92)

TY752VAAAA (95)

 

How can I confirm if this swap will work, or can be made to work?

you need to confirm that they have the same final drive / diff ratio. that it the stumbling block. the same clutch type , push vs. pull and / or hydro vs. cable also MAY be factors, but probably not.

 

the 95 5 speed has a 3.9 final drive ratio. look here for the 93 ratio: http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=32148

I see that ref you gave says:

This matches what I have found for the 95. There seems to be a tranny chart that goes back as far as 94. It says:

In any case if they don't match I could always just swap out the rear diff for the one that is now matched with the 92 tranny I want to use, couldn't I?

I see 3.9 ratio listed for a 95, but the tranny part number says it is matched with a 4.11. ???

Maybe a case of mid year part number transitions?

 

I suppose I could jack up a wheel and check the ratio directly (wheel vs drive shaft revolutions).

I measured the ratios in each by jacking the cart up and rotating the rear wheel while counting revolutions on the drive shaft.

 

For the 95 I got 3.95 and for the 92 I got 4.11. Pretty close to what you said. In any case they are definitely different.

 

I'm not understanding why the TY752VAAAA can be listed with a 4.11 rear diff for the 1994 model year.

 

In any case I assume this swap can work if I also swap the rear diff with it. Is that right? Would the speedo gear or anything else have to change as well?

the speedo will be off, but i don't think changing the speedo gear is a realistic option.// you have to split the case, i think.

 

you can step up to a GT size tire, 205/55/16, with a 24.9 inch diameter with out any head ache. ( lego L = 24.2", GT = 24.9", outback = 26.2" ) going larger will require outback struts.

 

larger tires will offset the speedo error.
