spec.B Dream
Finally finished up this evening. Initial impressions are excellent. The clutch pedal is much stiffer and very low to the floor, but I like that. The clutch grabs a lot quicker than the OEM did. It feels like I can shift faster and the car takes off faster. There are no noises. Now that I'm back on the stock catback exhaust (with catless downpipe), the car is completely silent to drive. I'm loving it. I'll post up again after break-in. Since the flywheels weigh the same, I don't think there is any difference with driveability. Well, except that it actually feels easier to get the car moving from a stop. The clutch grabs so much more quickly that I don't have to wait for it to slip and grab like the OEM did. I'm very happy with it based on the quick drive I did tonight. We'll see how my morning commute goes. So far, the ACT HDSS and OEM STi fly seem like the perfect combo for the daily driver with more than OEM torque (rated at 515 ft/lbs). Drogos
If you do, I haven't seen Import Image be beat. $220 and free shipping. PM Josh, and I'm sure he'll hook you up. http://www.importimageracing.com/p/Subaru-OEM-04-07-Subaru-STi-Flywheel.html ok that link is dead and closest to direct replacement for 08 spec b i have found is this: http://www.importimageracing.com/act-heavy-duty-performance-street-clutch-kit-for-07-09-lgt-spec-b.html My problem is that description is misleading since it says: 05-09 spec b so there is one fail right there and 08' have different size flywheels than earlier models from what i hear too. I know I have SMFW and 06+sti flywheels should be the same but does it mean 06-08 STi or 06-11 STI? What determines if I can reuse my oem FW?? the amount of run off ? After machinning it down, typically how much weight will I loose. I don't want to loose too much I actually love the feal of the stock clutch and don't care for anything more agressive. spec.B Dream
I can't answer your questions about how to know if you can reuse your OEM FW, but if you plan to, aside from getting it machined, I believe you need to run the specific 07-09 spec.B ACT clutch kit. The actual friction area on the spec.B FW is a little smaller than the STI FW. I have read about members reusing their spec.B FW with an STI kit just fine but I also have read about members having problems with it. So, yes, assuming your OEM FW is reusable/machinable, that link you posted is fine. If you don't want to go through the hassle of machining and want/need a new FW, then your best bet is to order the STI FW and clutch kit. The STI clutch is rated for a few more ft/lbs and is much more common (easier/cheaper to source) if you need to service the clutch down the road. Here're the current links for what I run: http://www.importimageracing.com/act-heavy-duty-street-clutch-kit-for-04-sti.html http://www.importimageracing.com/subaru-oem-04-07-subaru-sti-flywheel.html or the combo for $1 off: http://www.importimageracing.com/act-heavy-duty-street-clutch-kit-and-oem-flywheel-for-04-12-subaru-sti.html
sirsimon
If you are putting down big power (or plan to) but want to keep good feel, the Exedy HyperTwin is awesome. I have put many miles on a highly tuned WRX with this clutch (and full STI trans) and it is the best. Kicks the crap out of the ACT SS/XD setup I had on my Spec. Nice light effort, positive engagement, and puts the power down like you wouldn't believe. Personally, I ran a Gruppe S forged flywheel. If you are going to take it all apart, you may as well do it right.
Drogos
After spending way to much time online and reading through shit load of reviews and opinions I will go with FX300 and OEM SMFW whether it's my machined one or brand new one. Now just need to wait for some extra cash to burn and/or clutch to give me reason to buy new.
