D-VO
Sorry to bump this, but I bought my car yesterday (woo) and yesterday evening as a friend was getting into the car, she broke the handle. I don't blame her for it as I would have done it the next time I needed to open the door. On subarupartsonline it lists the inner handle and the outer handle, I'm assuming I need the outer handle correct?
D-VO
Nevermind, answered my own question. This thread is awesome though!
Apex-XT
Happened to me over the last week.... left rear door froze shut. I tried to pull open and something popped and rattled down inside. I dissassembled the door and used JBWeld to put it back together .... twice. Second time I dremmeled out a channel in the center of the broken hook-shapped piece and set in a bit of sheet metal. It didn't matter. Still broke at the glued part. So, I've just ordered a replacement handle from subarupartsonline. We'll see how it works out. Seriously, why would Subaru make a critical part like this out of plastic. Imagine someone being stranded in their car after a wreck with the door slightly jammbed because of frame twisting. Instead of being able to yank the door open, the handle breaks off. Jeesh. OTOH, the directions in the thread above were perfect. It is somewhat difficult to get the lower two tabs out of the door, but eventually they will work out with some slight grunting and cursing. 300k miles, BNR 16g, CryoTune, 'Bullet-Proofed' IC, Motor rebuild @ 250k b/c of a cracked exhaust valve. hybridandy
I had to replace my driver side too. Bottom tabs a a bitch but you can take a pair of shears and cut the tabs down/off from the inside and make it easier (your not reinstalling the original handle, so break it). Ordered my replacement part from FredBeans (forum sponsor) and it came in unpainted black. It was not textured and did not need sanded. Local Subaru dealership body shop painted it for me for $30. D-VO
OK, so I did my driver's front door and the right rear door. All I can say is HOLY BALLS who the hell designed that front window to block the door handle bolt? It was a ridiculous fight to get the left bolt off and on, but it was worth it to have the door handle functioning again. The guide was helpful. Totally worth just cutting up the tabs on the old handles with a pair of diagonal cutting pliers. After I fought the front door for an hour and a half, the rear door handle was a piece of cake and over in 30 minutes.
H2OSB
The replacement write up is great except for one thing, the rear most bolt can VERY easily removed and replaced by simply rolling down the window. When I first removed it, I used a wrench...it's a pain in the ass...no other words describe it. When I was putting the handle back in, I could NOT get my ham hands up in there to START the bolt. Looking at the window guide rail, it appears the window would slide down and remain in the way. With no alternative, I reconnected the switch and lowered the window to the bottom. By damn if the window didn't just move right out of the way of the bolt hole. You have a direct line to the bolt hole through the little access hole. I simply put a 10mm socket on the end of long 1/4 inch drive extension and it went real easy. Glad I got that fixed...it got REAL old getting into the drivers door by reaching forward from the back seat
JayInVA
Meh, guess I'll join the club. Heard the trademark snap, rattle and drop and now my drivers door wont open. Searching for and ordering a part now.

derkahn
editing cause I am old and have no idea how to get photos to show up.. I am afflicted as well and I may have figured out why this keeps happening to us.. I too heard the classic click-rattle-clunk a few weeks ago as the pieces dropped to the bottom of the door.. so after a few beers I may have figured it out.. AND may have a suggestion for those of you who are buying new door handles (I may be in that boat as well as I am not sure my epoxy job will hold) https://www.flickr.com/photos/47145022@N02/16359033062/ so here is what you get when you take it all apart... here is how wide the plastic is.. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47145022@N02/16359031922/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/47145022@N02/16172554580/in/photostream/ and ( I think) here is how much space that plastic piece has to fit into..call me out here guys because I have had a whole reverend and a leffe brown at this point.. but even if I stretch the caliper I maybe can get it to 7mm.. so jamming that 8~mm piece into a 6.9-7~mm sleeve doesn't sound like a recipe for longevity.. why should you care? well if you do order a new( or new to you) door handle I would file down the red piece from 6.9~ to at least 8.1-8.3mm, bceause (I'm not and engineer and have no idea what the terminology is) but it looks like there is a lot of stress from the part being too wide for the fitting it is going into (the red sleeve/copper looking thingy) , which may have caused it to fail. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47145022@N02/16172304958/ look at the wear at the very tip of the depth gauge. I am trying it all out with this epoxy to see if it works.. if not I am in the market for a new passenger rear handle in OBP as well. https://www.flickr.com/photos/47145022@N02/16172304288/ p.s if someone wants to school me on how to attach photos I am open to learning... SBT
Edit your post, Click Go Advanced, Click http://legacygt.com/forums/images/editor/attach.gif(attachments), then Browse, Choose, Open, Upload. This will upload all of the photos to the post. The down-side is that they'll all be at the bottom, not in the text for linear reading and comprehension. But they're loaded to the site's server so if Flikr is down, members can still see the photos. The better way to do this though, especially if you want to couple the photos to your text, is to first edit your post. Then open-up your flikr account, right click your first photo, and copy the photo location (URL). Back in our post, put your cursor where you want the photo to be, then click http://legacygt.com/forums/images/editor/insertimage.gif (insert image), paste your URL into the box, and click OK. Do this for all of your photos - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
