1998 GTB roof leak?

Recommended Posts

I have a BG 1998 legacy gtb twin sunroof model, when it rains heavily the roof filles up with water on the drivers side above where you pull down the sun visor. I tried pouring water over the roof myself to recreate the leak to try and get it sorted out but couldn't find it myself :S seems to just drain out normally when entering the sunroof guttering

This is worrying me as i'd hate to imagine the cost if it lead to rust D: has anyone had a similar issue or care to shed some light on this situation?

No pics as they don't really help -_-

Wow huge job you did there, looks amazing :> (Read the whole thread lol)

Is it very easy to get the ceiling off? I heard that you had to deglaze the front windshield :S I'm pretty keen to give it a try, just need some basic instruction about taking the ceiling off really

The thing is that it seems to be draining alright but couldn't hurt to check aye.

You might also know, completely ot, In subaru letgacy's that have had a sub in them (Mine doesn't but previous owner did) there seems to be a common small rattle the starts in the back left of the car, I have noticed the exact same rattle in 3 friends subarus that all started after getting subs in them. Do you happen to know what needs to be tightened?

Yeah, it was a big job to do the headgaskets, but I'm glad it's done. I'm not certain what you mean by deglazing the windshield glass, but I did have a brand new windshield glass installed because the original one a had a long crack in it at the bottom. I thought that water was coming into the cabin because of the broken glass, but the glass shop assured me that merely the outermost layer of the windshield was cracked, and that water was coming in elsewhere (they were correct).

To get the headliner off, you do not have to remove the glass (if that is what you meant). There are plastic trim pieces that surround the edges of the headliner that should be carefully pried off (I used a tack remover with a slightly curved end to get underneath the trim). You'll need to remove the sunvisors and the overhead light/sunroof control panel as well to gain access. There are two drain tubes that connect at the front corners of the sunroof drain tray. These tend to shrink with age and become disconnected. That seems to be the common problem, and clogged drains are sometimes the culprit.

There are also two drains at the rear of the sunroof which flow towards the rear of the car. In my case the rear drains were fine, and it turned out that I did not need to access the back of the sunroof (but didn't know that until I could see for certain, lol).

Only thing stopping me know is the rear view mirror? How do you actually get that little cover off? I can't seem to pry it off and im scared of breaking it -_- what the hell is holding it down? The forces of the greek gods themselves? rage in 3.....

EDIT: Got it off, just pull, wow.

Ok progress report. I found out the leak is coming through the front of the front sunroof then dripping down the plastic base to the ceiling where it is filling up the drivers side

There is a lot of rust on the sunroof panel that is lifting it :/ I'm guessing i'll have to get a new sunroof :(
