slacks
Well it's another thread about 6mt swaps into an 05 LGT this time. Late last year I was lucky enough to inherit a blown 6mt through work. YES a blown 6mt! The driver just bought his 07 STI from our dealership and managed to shear all of the teeth off of the front pinion shaft resulting in further damage to the DCCD unit and it's respective transfer case bearings. Since the DCCD unit was over $2500!! the cost to rebuild it exceeded the price to just replace it and Subaru replaced the transmission as a unit. Luckily for me the gearset and bearings inside of the housing remained in excellent condition as most of the damage occurred in the front and center diff. It seems that the gigantic electromagnet in the dccd and the front magnetic drain plug really helped saved the rest of the gearbox. So now a few months later it's time to take on the challenge of a 6mt rebuild and swap but on a reasonable budget of $1000. Yup, around $1000. It may not be as glorious as some of the others but for me it's enough considering some of the goodies I have collected over the time working. So here's the plan... -6mt into 05 LGT -OEM clutch, flywheel and pressure plate setup. -Spec b center viscous conversion -2.5i driveshaft -conversion of the rear lgt axles to spec b (frankenstein!) -08+ sti shift linkage -R180 rear - and much more to rebuild including the front and center differential/trasnfer case overhaul Hopefully along the way pull some interesting moves to help dispel some of the alternate possibilities when it comes to doing a less expensive 6mt swap as these are becoming more and more popular for us. KCwagon
Don't forget to change out the neutral safety switch when the transmission is OUT of the car. Ask me how I know . Good luck with the project. You will LOVE the 6 speed.
slacks
hahaha yeah there's a lot of switching going on. I drive these pretty often while at work and they're so much better than the 5mt in terms of the gearing and feel. there's a lot of love in those transmissions

Good luck with the install!
slacks
Thanks! Tomorrow is the big day and start of the rebuild! I'm expecting a huge shipment for me in our stock order tomorrow. The parts guy is getting upset at how much I had to order lol. Everything but the used driveshaft will be at work tomorrow waiting for me so I'll snag some pictures tomorrow to post up. I hide my AP when I bring it in lol... that sucks about kits for the spec axles on back order. the axles themselves can't be cheap... Haha it doesn't matter to me if you're tuned lol. As far as the axles go, they're priced at about $280 a piece at my cost. The original plan was to just change out the inner DOJ's while the rear diff was being switched but for the sake of convenience and NOT doing this around finals for school... I might just swipe the card and close my eyes lol. Btw if anyone wants to come visit me at Subaru of Cherry Hill hit it up! lol shameless promotion
BMA44
^ that sucks that they are $280/piece. should i ask for you by "slacks" tomorrow when I come in for oil change? I spoke with Barry about an aligment b/c i was lowered on Eibachs recently and he said if it's driving straight not to worry about it, but I might want to get it done anyway. maybe you can take it for a spin and be the judge. thanks! -Brian

slacks
oh wow! that's what's it's supposed to look like? http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/Slacks/El%20Gee%20Tee/P1020865.jpg Slowly but surely coming together... ring and pinion ready to go together next week.... what a mess http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/Slacks/El%20Gee%20Tee/P1020866.jpg
slacks
Well it's almost together! But a few setbacks have happened.... In order to change to a spec b viscous I would have to change out the counter shaft assembly and rear drive transfer gear. Unfortunately the counter shaft isn't even available!!!! So DCCD is going to have to be the option. Pulling some magic subaru strings to see what I can make of this before the option happens to rebuild the unit. That's the last obstacle before buying axles and throwing it in the car. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/Slacks/El%20Gee%20Tee/P1020872.jpg

slacks
It must be nice to have connections... Hahaha it has its perks. I'm hoping subaru-clause can work his magic for a DCCD filled christmas (early or late one). Doesn't mean the rebuild didn't cost $$$
slacks
What's a DOJ? I'm pretty sure you didn't mean Department Of Justice... I believe it stands for double offset joint.. but it's easier to use that
slacks
Update! After the months of waiting... my Spec b DOJ Kits are finally in! They do exist! The DOJ boot is a different part number than the spec b's but they're only about $10 each making the final axle upgrade cost just under $200! The only thing that needs to be settled is the lack of DCCD unit and controller later.... this is getting tricky. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/Slacks/specbdoj.jpg?t=1300830193
NSFW
Whoah. So you have the parts to convert an LGT rear axle to R180 inner joints? Is it just the part number shown on the box, or is anything else required? Thanks!
slacks
Whoah. So you have the parts to convert an LGT rear axle to R180 inner joints? Is it just the part number shown on the box, or is anything else required? Thanks! Those are the parts right there! I'll get a better picture tomorrow but the kit includes the DOJ, inner parts, large circlip, new snap ring, two bands for the boot and grease. The boot itself is a different part number as well so I'll get a picture of those too tomorrow. The total was about $190 for everything at my cost which is significantly cheaper than the $350+ per new axle and worth it more if you can wait for the parts to come in. The parts list inside of the kit was dated 3/11/11 lol. At this point the only thing need to finish the swap is a DCCD unit.... The one I got was totally destroyed and needs to be rebuild or replaced.... might be another $900 for the overhaul kit but it'd be nice to have it ready by may 1st for the morgantown, pa sonic meet. So far the total for the swap has run me about $1200 total too! I'm so close!
