Found ATF in the front differential

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a used transmission with differential and when I was checking the fluids to see what kind of shape they were in, I noticed the front differential fluid was RED. I'm assuming the person put ATF in instead of 80/90 Gear lube into the differential case. At least I assume it's supposed to have Gear lube instead of ATF.

What kind of damage can happen if it was run that way for a long time?

any metal in the front diff ''fluid / oil''??

why was the trans pulled in the first place?

diffs are pretty hardy, but long term it would not be good.

the front diff holds way less oil than the trans holds fluid. there damage risk is much greater that the trans was run with about 3.6 qts. too little fluid. this is a killer.

so far all of the discussion has been centered around adding trans fluid to the diff. but there is the very real possibility that the front shaft seal is shot and fluid is ''leaking'' into the front diff. this is not an impossible fix but only for the brave and the talented.

i'd look for another trans unless you have lots of time and don't mind the risk of having to re-do it.

will the seller take it back if it is bad? it seems ''bad'' to me.
