mars_volta
Well the smell came back after about a half hour on the freeway. We got a lot of snow and ice so I had the heat on full blast. It was about 20 degrees out. WTF??

BrannigansLaw
I have the same smell, every time I get out of the car. My mechanic told me I have a leaky front axle seal, and after reading this thread, I'm thinking that is what's causing it. Will report back once it is fixed on whether the smell is gone or not. LGT412
just had my boot replaced as well. smell was horrible. the grease they use is VERY hard to clean off. especially once it starts making its way into downpipe heat shield crevices! Guest PeteAWD
Put the car on some Rhino ramps, wait for the engine to cool down, spray the pipe and shield with engine de-greaser and rinse. You're also going need to rinse out the cowl with some type of freshening detergent. I doesn't go away easy. just had my boot replaced as well. smell was horrible. the grease they use is VERY hard to clean off. especially once it starts making its way into downpipe heat shield crevices! gnod85
hmm... interesting. I recently starting smelling a slight burning rubber smell too. Thought I was going crazy cause it was very faint.. but now that i think about it, I remember during one of the snow storms, I drove over a HUGE pothole, with my front left wheel. possibly something wrong with the axle? guess i'll be definitely heading over to azp now. YeuEmMaiMai
my car smelled for about a month and a half after I replaced my driveshaft... that grease is a pita to get off even with a power washer...
