blackinches
Finally installed an upipe and downpipe but I have a question about the sound. it makes a putt putt noise. Is that a sign of an exhaust leak?
rice_rocket
That's a very vague question.. but any real putting is probably an exhaust leak. UP and DP make the tone deeper, but doesn't putt.....
blackinches
it sounds fine at idle, but when i accelerate it basically sounds like a 250cc motorcyle. it seems to be coming from the passenger side. so i'm thinking it's an exhaust leak somewhere, but i've never dealt with one so i wanted some confirmation that that is what an exhaust leak would sound like. rice_rocket
That's a much better description, and yes that would sound like an exhaust leak. Some say the heat shield might be off, but it sure sounds to me that it's the common leak people find when replacing their pipes.
blackinches
is there a part that is most prone to these leaks? and the solution to an exhaust leak would be to basically make sure that everything is tightened down?
adf6666
Good to know. I'm new to the modification scene so it's been kind of an adventure so far. I just had a Perrin UP/Invida DP/ and HKS silent hi power setup installed and I'm getting the putt-putt sound under acceleration in the passenger side area as well. Would the DP be a good place to check first?
adf6666
One more thing...I didn't have the putt putt sound to begin with but it has developed over the past ~250 miles since the install. Seems like something might need to be tightened...
underpowerd
if it's a putt-putt from the p/s, i'd check the fr. o2 sensor for a slight backout.
blackinches
it turns out my problem was with the header not being tightened down enough.
adf6666
Mine ended up being a nut missing on the manifold post. Funny we had the same issue at almost the same time. She purrs like a kitten now! The HKS exhaust is very deep and aggressive (but not obnoxious)! I love it! No more putt-putt!
