Gear indicator and clicking noise.

So my girlfriend was driving home from work today in the 92 ss and she heard a clicking sound in the dash like the headlight relay or the washer relay sound. While it was making this sound a box around the "p" indicator was flickering. The prnd indicators have never worked in the car. What controls them in the dash? The transmission was changed before I bought it to one from a 91 NA...so I suspect a wrong or unplugged sensor. (amont other issues running a NA tranny in a turbo...lol) Any idea what the clicking may be? She also doesn't think the dash lights are working but it was too bright out to tell. The head and parking lights do though. I wont be able to drive the car till late tonight, just wanted to see if there are any well known issues that this may be.
