ABS problem 2006 Legacy 2.0R

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 2006 Legacy from a Subaru dealer and went through the fuses, the ABS one was blown, replaced it immediately and then felt from time to time when hitting 2nd or 3rd gear that something holds the car back, removed the fuse and the problem went away, what can it be???

It was the ABS fuse according to the fuse box..

Any help appreciated

Regards Frank

Traction control system - so it's possible that there is a problem with one or more of the sensors or the control unit.

Try to install the fuse and disable the traction control and see if the problem is present again.

What you also can do is to check the wheel sensors and the tooth rings at each wheel to verify that they aren't obviously broken. And then with the fuse installed see if you can read codes. It may require a test drive to let the system throw the codes.

And if you experience "slowness" try to do a test run for 10-15 minutes where the problem manifests itself as much as possible and then come to a slow stop with minimal use of the brakes. Go out and touch the wheel hubs to see if they are warm since it can be the VDC system that's messing up.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, the 2006 is a bit new to me, got a 2001 Legacy 2.5 that the wife is driving, there where NO error codes so far on the 2006 but i know the previous owner hit a curb on the left so it's possible that a sensor may screw around...have to take the wheel of and inspect first, i am however not sure where the traction control should be switched off, no buttons in this model :)

OK, so no button at the lower right as in this pic:

What you describe sounds like a TCS/VDC problem since that is integrated with the ABS. And since it was a blown fuse it can either be that there is a damaged wire somewhere or some fault in the ABC control unit. Unless the fuse was replaced with a blown one to bypass inspection by the previous owner.

Does the ABS warning light come on at all?

The teeth for the sensor rings at the wheels shall be clean and not damaged so if there is damage they should be replaced. Distance between sensor and ring also have to be correct. Be aware that as long as the fuse is removed the ABS is probably not working - and that should give a warning light.

But you should also contact the dealer and notify them that you have discovered that the ABS isn't working. And make them aware that if they didn't tell you about the non-working ABS they did sell you a car that lacked a safety feature. It may be a case of getting this problem fixed by them without any cost for you. Also check in what the local regulations says about missing safety features in used cars.
