Problem with temp gauge spiking up when on STOP.

I have a 1998 legacy wagon 2.5 recently the temperature goes up when im on dead stop and I have to rev the engine then temp goes down so basically when i'm driving its in normal temp. I dont know where to start the diagnose the problem.

 

Any help will be greatly appreciate.

I'd say check coolant level first, and then check if your fans are functioning.

Fixed the problem it was the thermostat found out the old wasn't oem part. Replaced it with a new oem part so far been driving the car and no more temp spiking up

Aaaaaaalways use genuine parts.

 

Sooooo many water pumps and thermostats i have replaced that were crappy aftermarket and had crapped out.
