Car overheated caused engine problems

Recommended Posts

Hey, Im new to the forum so i guess this can be my introduction too. I'm from San Diego, CA born n raised Im in the military:( and i recently bought a 05 Legacy gt. its 5speed, pearl white, leather interior (i hate leather) ill post pics of it later its midnite here.

i was driving on the freeway after work to take someone somewhere n it was a hot day. i get to about 85 and start going down a slope so i put it in neutral, all of a sudden i try merging onto 1 of the ramps then i realize my car locked up (had it happen to me before in a different car) im able to get to the shoulder lane safely. then we pop the hood n the turbo is smokin and so is the coolant tank. we leave the car there for a while and go get coolant and put it in, we try to start it back up and it wouldnt start, so we let it sit a little longer then we turn it back on and it starts but there was a loud knocking noise. i get the car towed back to where i live and i ask a few of the guys what the knocking noise is (2 of them own wrx's) we came up with that it could be piston, connecting rod, valves or lifters. i was told the best thing to do is have it rebuilt with performance parts put in it or whatever.

in reality im lost and dont know what to do. im trying to do the cheapest way possible. my engine cranks slowly and u can hear the knocking noise. its still driveable but im not gonna take my chances. what im really asking is what should i do and where do i go next. i have a warranty for it but that warranty is for the dealer i bought it from in cali and im in el paso texas.

WOW... What a first post... Welcome to the forum. A lot of knowledge and help is available here. Sorry for your car troubles.

ARE YOU MODDED AND IF SO WHAT?

Don't assume that your car overheated. It sort-of sounds like your turbo grenaded and took a few things with it. Is it safe to assume you drive an automatic? This is going to be an expensive job. The first thing to do is probably contact the dealer and let them know the situation.

I can already guess what sort of trouble you are going to get into if you listen to the wrx peanut gallery. Those idiots are NOT telling you the cheapest way possible. STOP cranking your engine. Do not start replacing internals with no idea what you are trying to do, ON A BUDGET. Engine builds come out well when researched and not on a super tight budget.

Get the car fixed under warranty work, even if you need to borrow a pickup and rent a flatbed and tow the car.

If not under warranty, get it towed to a reputable shop that knows Subarus. Post in the regional forums and find a good shop. If you do have damaged internals, the dealer route is usually much more expensive.

+1 to the advice above. If you hear a loud knock, quit starting the engine. If something is damaged internally, running the engine can only make things worse.

Welcome to the forum and hope your luck improves!

Edit - Reread and saw the warranty comments. Contact the dealer in Cali and tell them you have issues but are too far away to tow. Politely tell them that you expect them to cover repair charges and that they can select the local shop you take it to. They may refuse, but there is no harm in asking.

its manual. it has a front mount intercooler, exhaust system n a short ram. i bought it like that and i bought a 4 year warranty with it. ima call the dealership n see if i can use the warranty where i am.
