Wiring Auxiliary Lights on a 92 Legacy

Recommended Posts

Hey I am trying to wire up a couple of extra lights on my legacy for a navigational tsd rally I am going in today, the problem is I need them to turn off and on with my high beams. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this, there are three wires comming out of the headlights, one is always on (I'm assuming my daytime running lights and regular lights when the brights are on) the other though only has power when the brights are off and the last one is a ground. Does anyone know a way to wire this?

Cheers

Kev

Someone else on here might have a better idea than this, but I would use a relay switched on by the wire that powers your high beams. That way, your extra lights will switch on with the brights, but they would draw their power directly from the battery instead of stealing power from your headlights. According to the manual I have, the power wire for the high beams should be red. I'll see if I can find a diagram to explain how to do this, since I'm bad at explaining this type of stuff.

Here's a diagram to give you an idea of what I mean, only instead of what's shown here, the number 85 post will just connect to a power wire spliced off your high beams, or better yet, directly off of your high beam switch. It's the diagram at the bottom of the page. You should be able to get a relay at any auto parts store for like $10.

Ya I tried connecting it to the red wire, and for some reason when the brights are on, it would turn the auxilary lights off. It doesn't make any sense according to my wiring diagram from the haynes manual. Thats a good idea to instal a relay though to draw power off the battery
