BarryT82
I've never had to work on an automatic so I have a question. I could have sworn I saw a post saying to check the atf level when it's cold, but I could be wrong. I have a 2005 Legacy GT 5EAT. I replaced the engine and the torque converter came loose causing a little fluid to spill. The dipstick is showing it a little low when cold. It's between the low and full line. Do I need to check it and add fluid when it's hot or cold?
Habitual Line Stepper
Drive it around for 15mins, then give the dipstick a check. "I for one do not doubt you, dude. Your car is fast and an internet legend." -Gire
I 5EAT Turkey Clubs
Your manual will tell you you can do both, but that its better to check when warm.
Rick
Warm the car up and drive it around for about 15min. Stop on a level surface and with the car idling check the fluid level.
BarryT82
Gotcha. So check it with the car running?

fishbone
Make sure it's in Neutral, not Park.As long as the ATF is above the Low or Min marks, but NOT above the Full/Max marks, you are fine. Overfilling the ATF is not a good thing, it'll start splashing and foaming. No bueno.

According to the vacation pics your supposed to park the car on a level surface and run the gear selector through Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive, back to Park, and then check the ATF. jhig
Only check in park, checking in neutral will give you a false reading.
fishbone
Good catch, it was supposed to be the other way around. I checked with the repair manual and yes, you do check it while in Park. Run the selector through all the positions first.
