Baddog
The boot on this is torn. What is it? And would it cause an annoying sound when you slightly turn to the right/left? http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1103/svq35u.jpg
dmanww
It's a tie rod. It moves the wheels right and left when you turn the steering wheel. You have a torn inner tie rod boot. ehsnils
It's a very good idea to replace that boot - and to clean and lubricate before the new boot is put on. Otherwise your steering may go bad.

rmb2485
Make sure you get an alignment after you replace the boot (and any other time you mess with suspension or steering components).
dmanww
yeah, or you may end up with a wonky steering wheel like on mine.
Baddog
Okay so what all would I need to pick up exactly to get this fixed?I normally go to autozone cause its local or can go to napa.
rmb2485
You'll need a new rack and pinion boot and some grease. Easiest way to change it is probably to disconnect that steering link from the knuckle and slide the new boot on. edit: And according to the FSM, the grease you need is "VALIANT GREASE M2" which I assume you can only get at the stealership for probably a few thousand bucks an ounce. Baddog
Something like this? Do I need a new inner tie rod as well? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsProduct.jsp?itemIdentifier=181169_0_0_7736&skuDescription=Duralast+/+Rack+%26+Pinion+Boot+Kit&brandName=Duralast&displayName=Rack+%26+Pinion+Boot+Kit&categoryNValue=14699999&sortType=&store=2225&isSearchByPartNumber=false&fromWhere=&fromString=search&counter=0&itemId=1091-0&navValue=14601091&filterByKeyWord=pinion+boot&productId=181169&searchText=pinion+boot&categoryDisplayName=Suspension+%26+Steering&parentId=46-
slickfast
Can you guys really see a crack in the steering rack boot? I'm not seeing it... Describe the annoying sound please. Is it a clicking noise the remains once you're at a certain steering angle? If so, it's not the steering rack at all. Check both sides and make sure your drive axle boots are all fine. This is my fault. This is just a picture on google I found of someone taking their hub apart. I never took a picture of my car. The one on mine is ripped in half. I have replaced both CV boots about 3 weeks ago.
slickfast
aHAH. That changes things. In that case I would clean it, grease it, and hope that I didn't fix it too late so that permanent damage has occurred. Keep us posted.
Baddog
If I did cause permanent damage what all would I need?
hrmjay
Hi, Thats a track rod end (also called a tie rod end). The noise you describe while turning is most probably a worn CV joint. The louder the clicking the more severe the noise. A slightly worn CV can be rejuvenated with a thorough clean up and plenty of graphite grease plus a new axle boot. If the noise persists the CV joint needs replacing.
Baddog
CV Joints were replaced awhile ago.
slickfast
so did you fix this yet or what?
Baddog
No, waiting to find out exactly what I need. It's been like this for 3 months now. I don't want to go get the wrong parts to take it apart. Seems like an easy replacement though.
