rear defrost and radio problem

so everyone pretty much knows about this problem and i remember reading somewhere on here that instead of getting the rear window replaced, they fixed the defrost "wire" in the window with a kit from an autoparts store. I wouldnt mind trying this before going to the dealer and spending $300-400. my question is how can i tell where there might be a break in the connection? sorry if it is worded funny, im not sure of the correct terminology.
