HSVs to have a Pontiac pout

Fans of Aussie muscle cars are in for a treat in March when Holden Special Vehicles releases a pair of cut-priced, Pontiac-look limited-edition models.

The $59,990 price tag on the HSV ClubSport GXP sedan is a saving of $8000 over the HSV ClubSport R8 on which it is based.

The second special model, the HSV Maloo GXP, will sell for $53,990, a saving of $9000 on the HSV Maloo R8. Auto adds $2000.

The styling of the new models follows the lead of this year's Holden SS V-Series special-edition models, which borrowed the frontal look of Holden's former US flagship export product, the Pontiac G8 GXP sedan.

Both HSV GXP models will be powered by the same 317kW 6.2-litre V8 as the Pontiac.

While the ClubSport GXP's suspension is the same highly regarded set-up from the Pontiac, HSV engineers had to do a special calibration for the Maloo GXP.

The ute uses SS V front shocks and springs and SS V rear shocks, but it gets Maloo rear springs and bushes to improve handling and lower the ride height slightly.

Both models will use the Pontiac's Brembo brake package.

Though the ClubSport GXP gains unique rear styling, the rest of the GXP package is as per the HSV E Series 2 range, including the new daytime running lights, front fascia, bonnet, fender vents and ClubSport interior features.

The sedan and ute GXP editions get cloth trim and the basic air-conditioning and audio controls. There is no leather seating option.

Launch control, brake-assisted cruise control and a bi-modal exhaust are not available on the GXP models.

The ute comes with a soft tonneau cover, the standard Commodore ute tailgate and the Commodore SS V side sill covers.

GXP colours available are white, red, black, silver, blue and gold, while the GXP sedan is also available in metallic grey.

As a point of value comparison, the Holden Commodore SS V sedan produces 270kW and starts at $55,290, so another $4700 is not a lot to pay for the extra oomph and street-cred of the HSV.

"We receive lots of inquiries about introducing a model to sit as an entry level to our brand and the GXP program provides us this opportunity," HSV boss Phil Harding said.

"I have always said that in order for a car to wear the HSV badge it needs to satisfy three criteria - performance, handling and design.

"Clearly these cars tick all three boxes."

Just 400 units of the special-edition sedan and 350 of the ute are available. Though delivery is in March, orders are being taken now, allowing qualified buyers to benefit from the Federal Government's 50 per cent investment allowance, which ends on December 31.
