SSpeed
'98 Outback SOHC 2.5L Just bought the car, has burned valves on one cylinder. How do you remove the plastic cam gears so the head can come off? The service manual talks about a special tool, but I'm sure there are other ways? Bdubs
I always use an interior trim removal tool which is basically a light duty prybar. Gently work your way around it, or two at the same time on opposite sides of each other, and it'll work its way out. Just be careful not to damage the sensors on the cam gears. SSpeed
Let me go one step back... how do you get the bolts off of the cam gear to get it to the point where gently work your way around it?
SSpeed
Also, I was looking at the factory service manual, do you really need to pull the cams to get the head off? They don't come off as one assembly?

Yes, where the "special tool" is required. You really want to use that, because you don't want the cams to move as you remove the gears. Some dealers will just let you borrow it, if you can convince them you'll bring it back. Also, you'll have to pull the cams to get the back timing belt cover off, because there are bolts holding it to the block AND the head.
SSpeed
Wow, a dealer will let me borrow the tool? So there aren't any wrench spots on the cam like some cars? I'm beginning to think it may be easier to simply pull the engine to do it....
