My NA Legacy whistles (??)

Recommended Posts

Hey all--

When the car reaches 40-45 MPH @ 1800-2000 RPM, usually in 5th gear, it makes a strange, building, medium-pitched ringing sound.

The ringing stops as the car gains speed or slows down.

The windows are all sealed shut & there is no roof rack.

The noise is definitely coming from the engine compartment.

I thought it was working out it's glitches but now past 1500 miles & it hasn't changed.

I'm not terribly concerned though it's a 6/10 on the "annoying scale."

Has anyone had a similar issue? Any ideas?

Hmm, thats unusual... I would take it in, considering that its sooo new, I can't imagine you having any problems with Subaru on this. it's best to take care of it now before it get's worse.

Thanks HuRRiC4Ne.

I will do so. It doesn't seem to affect performance, MPG, ride quality, etc. It's just a funny ringing. LOL

I thought perhaps someone else had experienced it....

Keep us updated, i'm curious to see what the issue was...

I think I'm experiencing something similar in my 06 legacy. It's happened on / off for the last year. Occasionally ill hear a subtle, but noticeable noise. An electric ring that changes pitch would be how I would best describe it. I tried to take a recording of it, but road noise was too much for my cell phone's mic.

If anyone ever found out what this was, please reply.

Thanks!
