flipsubie06 Posted May 18, 2010 Share Posted May 18, 2010 There was a thread on here from 2007 that went into great great great detail about installing HID's into the foglights: http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1021172&postcount=73 Its a great writeup that goes into incredible detail, but its a little too busy for me (and no pictures). I think it can be explained in a more simple fashion. So here's mine... If you're trying HID's in the fogs, chances are you've already mastered the HID's in the headlights. Headlights were simple.... the only thing that was altered was that gray "dust cap." Well the fogs are similar, but they have a black "dust cap" that needs a little more modification. The headlights can easily be put back to stock halogen, whereas the fogs WILL NOT be able to return to stock. What you will be modifying: 1. the black plastic fog light dust cap with plug 2. the short OEM fog light harness with white plug and gray plug Those two things are all you would need to return to stock, so even if you did want to go back it would be as easy as getting new dust caps and short harnesses. Lets begin.. I removed the front bumper to get to everything easier. This makes accessing the foglights and mounting ballasts much much easier. Take that short wire harness that was connected to the black cap and hack the gray plug off. Take the black plastic dust caps and cut the plug part off of it, leaving you with a nice opening. I used a drill, pliers, and the sidewalk (as sandpaper) to do this. I'm sure you have the proper tools, i.e. a dremel. Get the opening to be about the size of the back of the cap... see pics below. http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs098.snc1/4981_524967085312_72100768_31074995_7536372_n.jpg http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs098.snc1/4981_524967090302_72100768_31074996_3731812_n.jpg Take the HID power wires out of the rubber grommet and cut the connectors off of it (as shown in the bottom right of the pic above) Solder the hacked HID power wires to the short OEM harness that has the white plug (red to red, black to black) Pull the HID wires and grommet through the hole in the black dust cap. Seal the grommet using silicone sealant or whatever. Also put some sealant in the holes in the grommet where the red and black power wires once were. H3 HID bulbs go in factoy fog light housing, put on black dust cap, connect HID to ballast to factory plug, mount ballasts, put bumper back on, enjoy! note: plugs are all different, so they will only plug into exactly where they are supposed to go!! easy!! oh and if you mess something up, its not my fault... mine work perfectly This seems a lot more complicated than it actually is. Fogs are used to supply low, flat light that extends no more than 5-6ft in front of the car for use in extremely low visibility situations, ie- fog. They are supposed to throw light out at least 25 ft. If they don't, you need to adjust them properly. Lots of people seem to think that foglights are useless. Take a flashlight and go stand in front of a mirror. Keep the flashlight flat and eye level, what do you see? Nothing, you are blinded by the reflection. Now take the flashlight and keep it level, but lower it two feet, now what happens? You will still see some light, but it is not an almost direct reflection. This would be my logical reasoning as to why fog lights are low on a car and yes, in theory and application, they do help by not reflecting light directly back at you off of water particles in fog. Like you just leave the HID's on all the time, when you turn off and on your car? If so how are they holding up against the starting? As in, are they always lighting up on the first start-up, or you have to turn them off then back on? That's what I'm wondering! I'm hesitating since I run my fog's as drl's and well I'd like to go HID route, but don't want to always turn them off when shutting the car, and turning them back on when turning on the car... Yukonart Posted December 9, 2010 Share Posted December 9, 2010 Don't be lazy. Fog lights shouldn't be run unless the conditions call for it. Leave them off unless you need them. Problem solved. On a semi-related note, I'm looking into HID kits for both my headlights and fogs. My headlights keep burning out prematurely. . . . yeah, who knew? And the fogs. . . well, HID kits aren't that much more than PIAA Ion Crystals. In either case, the fogs won't come on unless they're needed. . . and YES, THEY MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE RIGHT CONDITIONS. I ran over a mountain pass here in Washington a few winters ago with just ONE of them working, and it meant the difference between seeing the fog lane and not. Wait! the Legacy was made in America:lol:. If u want to see using the fogs adjust them up. Monwells Posted December 10, 2010 Share Posted December 10, 2010 What would you think about doing a install that i can use in bad weather but be able to just eliminate my headlights so the rest of my lights are on but only the fog lights light up the road.
