rich204
Hello everyone. Just need your thoughts on this one. I have an 08 Legacy 2.5i with 27000kms on it, using synthetic from the beginning. Ok, here's my concern...after storing it for just a day in summer, I start the car and dark smoke comes out of the tail pipe. It also happens when the car is parked for work in the winter. Is this normal for such a new car?
aigochamaloh
How soon did you put synthetic in? If you put it in too soon, the rings didn't wear in correctly. Subaru engines have notoriously long break in times, sometimes upwards of 10k miles.
rich204
I switched to synthetic at 12000 kms, dealer said not right away. Could a synthetic blend stop this smoke problem?
aigochamaloh
I think you switched too soon. 12000 k's equals about 7500 miles. That's supposedly the first oil change interval. Most motors are broken in pretty much by 3k miles, but like I said, I've heard Subaru motors take awhile to break in. If this is really the case and the rings weren't fully worn in, then that's it. Changing oil won't help, it'll just burn oil from now on. The great properties of synthetic oil prevented the proper break-in of the rings.
