I have a few newbie car questions.

1. I want to lower the car. I have 17" rims. How does this process work, do I put the rims on first? What do I need to do, buy new coils? Or can a shop compress the current ones? How much would you recommend lowering it to give it a sportier look? And how much does this cost?

2. HID headlights. Where can I buy HID headlights? Do I need to look for my specific car model, and do you just buy the bulb, or is there a kit you have to buy altogether.

3. Are there any spoilers/wings available for 2001 Subarus? I love the STi one, are there any similar to that?

Thanks for viewing.

Those repairs look great!

Regarding your questions,

1- you can put your 17's on without lowering springs, but it's gonna look funny if you don't lower the car first.

Purchasing lowering springs will help you, or coilovers.

Just springs are a cheaper alternative, and if you are using stock struts, assuming you are, you don't want to lower the car anymore than an 1".

The install is pretty basic, but you should probably expect to pay around $300 with an alignment if you pay someone to do it.

2- Crucial Racing is a vendor here, and they sell HID kits, you can check them out here, http://www.crucialracing.com/products/hid.php

3- You could just get OEM (but don't, please). There are many JDM options for spoilers here at http://www.japanparts.com, select your BE/BH from the dropdown menu. I tried to get some examples, but here is one (the STi you speak of), the site is being slow as hell right now.

  • For the lowering kit, i found this,

http://www.drivewire.com/products/subaru-legacy/lowering-kit/398/

Its a 1.4" drop..would you mind finding me an example of how that would look like? Is a body kit required to make it look nice? I don't wanna buy a body kit.

The site says it fits these trims...which one is mine?

2001 Legacy GT 4 Cyl 2.5L AWD

2001 Legacy GT Limited 4 Cyl 2.5L AWD

2001 Legacy L 4 Cyl 2.5L AWD

If this is what I need, do I just buy it and bring it to a shop? How much will they charge me approximately?

  • As for the HID kits

Im interested in buying the really blue kit (8000K+)

Do you know if my car can fit these? Is this all I need to buy, the bulb?

Thanks for your help! Much appreciated.

You'd need an entire headlamp assembly conversion to run HID headlights, unless of course you want to blind people with HID bulbs in reflector housings.

Well HIDs arent my bigggest concern now. I have a question about the link I posted earlier,

http://www.drivewire.com/products/subaru-legacy/lowering-kit/398/

Is this all I need to lower my car? Is it even reliable for the price?

What do you want to gain from lowering the car? Better handling? Better looks? (stupid reason to lower a car)

Better handling will start with better tires. Larger wheels with tires with shorter and stiffer sidewalls will make a big difference, so will sway bar upgrades. In most cases springs alone won't be worth it.

I could lie to you and say handling, but I want to lower it because 17" rims look stupid on stock height.

looks like they did a great job with the repairs.

as for lowering, coilovers woudl be the best bet

if you throw aftermarket springs on your stock struts that have seen action for the last 8 yrs, they're going to explode instantly (ok, maybe not that dramatic but they'll probably go soon)

Just watch out with the HID:s the 4300K lights are the lights that provides best light output (generally) while the 8000K lights has a color temperature that is a lot higher than the sun that is roughly 5000K.

This means that you may annoy a lot of people if you run the 8000K.

Also check so it isn't a reason for a failed inspection - or a factor of being a severe cop magnet.

+1 for the good-looking repair. Personally I think the car looks good as it is - the spacing wheel/fender is equal all around.

Who did the repair?

The bumper is about 3/4" too far to the driver's side compared with the uprights between the headlight and grille. The gap on the bottom edge of the grille is greater on the passenger side than the driver's side.

If you did that yourself / had friends help etc, then I'd say it's a pretty good job, maybe you can just tweak that bumper a little to the passenger side?

If you paid a shop for that, then have them tweak the bumper for you.

So I would need to buy coilovers and springs? How much would this run me? I looked them up on ebay and a few websites and they all run 1000+
